Yeah, the first Vicky Bliss is kind of pointless. They're better totally awesome once John is involved (cornflower blue eyes!) and while I don't think Silhouette in Scarlet is anything to write home about, the others are comfort fic for me, with the shenanigans and the humor and everything. Definitely try another one in the series.
