I have to disagree with you slightly when it comes to Neil Gaiman. Personally, I prefer American Gods to Neverwhere, although the latter is quite good.

Most people disagree with me on this point. American Gods is certainly a more ambitious novel, but to me Neverwhere is a little jewel of perfection. It's my comfort book.
