Hahha it seems we are both just kind of hopeless over these two. ♥

My instinct is also to not worry about the metaphysical and what happens to their souls after they die, particularly since I don't believe in souls or life after death or that sort of thing myself, but like you said, these are very real in SPN. Therefore, they're very real to Castiel, even if they aren't to Dean. It used to be that I'd spend hours analyzing every word Dean said and every expression he made, but in the past year or so that I've been in this fandom, I've found myself becoming increasingly fascinated by (and emotionally invested in) Castiel's psyche, trying to pick apart every little thing he does and figure out what's going on inside his head. So I guess thinking about stuff like souls and metaphysics became unavoidable.

*g* I agree about the red tape. 'Sides, that isn't even fun to read/write about!

I just checked and the comment was from the tail end of December, so a good couple of months after The End aired (in early October). But I guess that episode had some pretty lasting effects, because the general feeling I get from fandom is still that falling is a bad thing, at least on the surface. But like you, it ultimately didn't change things for me either, for the exactly same reasons you talked about.

Hmm, but you said it didn't used to be this way, that you couldn't see a happy ending for Castiel outside of falling. How and when did that change? Now that you've brought this up, I also would be really interested in a fic that could give Castiel a non-falling happy ending without all the contrived red tape. The End made this even more difficult than it already was because it seems clear that if Castiel stays on earth after the other angels return to heaven, he won't even have the option of holding on to his angel mojo.
