Thanks! I haven't seen as much Twilight Zone as I should have, though I have seen the episode ithrills mentioned, and I immediately went "Oh!" and thought of it the second TTZ was mentioned. This story was actually much more heavily influenced by the Aimee Bender story "End of the Line" from her collection Willful Creatures. Also, The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut and Paradise Lost.
