Oh, God. As much as it pains me to say this, if you've finished The Thief and you're not head over heels in love with Gen, I'd say don't bother continuing. I read that book until it fell apart, and when the sequel was published, years later, I actually hated it at first, because of some character related issues. And eventually I loved it as well, and I loved the third and fourth immediately. But they're all about the characters to me.

I do agree with the above comment that the draw of the series is probably the plot, but I'm 100% a character driven person, and I love every character in this series to death. I can't imagine it being worthwhile if you don't care about Gen, or the queens, or the magus, or Sophos.

On the other hand, thinking about it in more detail, I do think the political stuff gets more interesting later. A lot more interesting. MWT lays the groundwork in the first book, but obviously because of the narrative set up, you don't actually know much about what's going on. And that's absolutely not true for the rest of the series. So if that kind of thing is interesting to you, I guess I would say go for it.
