Oh, no, read the trilogy. But I never really responded to the second and third volumes quite like I did to Lyra and Pan. That part in the lab...I still choke up about it, and I got a sense of that with John separated from Nioke, and understood the shock at Rodney's even halfhearted suggestion of research.
