The emotional resonance of what dæmons are, of what they mean (which I tried, perhaps unsuccessfully, to capture here) is so potent in those books..
Not unsuccessfully, but it's different writing a short(ish) fic than writing a book where you can explain and build the world... you know? So it's not that you wrote a bad or squicky fic, because you totally didn't, it's just new and different. And don't get caught up with the negative part (it wasn't even that negative) of the feedback. I liked the fic plenty, and you showed me and others a new fascinating world.
And you absolutely didn't discouraged me to read the books. Don't worry. :)
