Mostly because virutally no one thinks of themselves by their surname, and so if I'm writing something from the POV of a character who doesn't have a canon first name, it makes me cranky
Exactly. Or, to use another example, I have this scene in my head between Parrish and Heightmeyer--no way is your shrink going to call you by your last name. It'd be weird. And unless you're Mulder or Scully, it mucks up sex scenes, too.
Thus, if I ever get the fic in question done, I suppose that this is the official announcement that I'll be following in your (casspeach's!) footsteps--hurrah for fanon first names!
