I was reading this, completely caught up in the story, and so of course I started thinking about what I'd do in the same situation. When everyone first gathered together, their mouths moving without sound, the first thing I though of was that, in that situation, I'd probably:

1) freak
2) start signing, see if anyone else there could speak ASL, and if they did
3) become their very best friend
