Sigh, I really liked Dresden Files and they canceled that after one season, now SGA, what's next? I swear the people who run this network walk into a room put on a blindfold and throw a dart and see which show it lands on and decide to cancel it.

Well, at least with VM it was, um. Past it's prime. But I think SGA is still really good (for definitions of "really good" that include "awesomely stupid and stupidly awesome sci-fi television of joy"). I really don't know what they are going to replace it with.

Me too, hubby and I were talking about this, and now that Doctor Who is done for the season not back until 2010 and Battlestar is almost over, what do they have? Eureka for now, but that's on Tuesdays, and now they're going to show Lost, but I have no interest in that show.

There's the show about the ghost hunters and it's spin off I guess, but it's done for this season I think and of course that idiotic Tracy Morgan show. Why they brought that back is beyond me.

Honestly, I don't know what they're going to show, especially on Fridays. I think this is an incredibly stupid move on their part.

They've probably got the Sarah Jane Adventures, but that's not going to be back for a bit, either. As I said on someone else's journal, SciFi seems to see it's viewership as the comic guy from the Simpson. They don't understand a lot of us are in that golden demographic all the stations are vying for. We bring the advertiser, thus bring the station money. Apparently someone was asleep in How To Not Run A Network Like Jordan Levin. Networks seem to not understand that the 1950s model is so out of date it's not even funny.

It occurred to me a minute ago that I wonder if part of the reason they canceled SGA is the monetary repercussions of buying Lost. You know it wouldn't be cheap, since it's playing on ABC. Of course what they fail to realize is that Lost seems to be losing fans after each season and not picking the numbers back up. I know they lost me halfway through Season 2. And I've no need to watch SJA or Who on SciFi. I can just buy the sets from the UK and play them on my Mac.

They keep buying canceled shows, too. Like Joan of Arcadia, which I loved, but it was only 2 seasons long. And that charlie Jade show. That Wolf Creek one. They're wasting more money by not investing in their own productions. I knew that SGA would be canceled once they got the 100 episodes. What surprises me is the lack of professionalism the networks displays repeatedly. If this were an average office job, the blunders would land someone fired. Unless they were a part of the family and couldn't be.

You make very good points. They are spending a lot of money on shows that have been canceled or losing viewership at the expense of shows that are doing well. I just don't get why they think this is a good idea. You're right, if these people worked in an average office job they would be fired in a heartbeat. While I enjoy watching Doctor Who on SciFi, as soon as it comes out on DVD we buy it, so it's not like I can't wait for it to come out and you're right about Lost, my husband really enjoyed the first season and then the second season came around and he lost interest because the show lost him.

*Sigh* I don't know about the people running this network, I really don't.

I think part of the problem is that they pretend to know what we want, but they don't really. And they don't want to know. Not really. It's easier to pretend to be the leader, pretending that experience brings wisdom, when there's a lot more involved in being successful. And same for me and Dr. Who. I recently bought the first three seasons with money I had set aside. And I'm waiting to get this last season in full. I really liked the first season of Lost, but they added more cast members, when they couldn't figure out what to really do with the little they had to begin with. And in the end, they pretty much ruined the characters people cared about.

I think you have to be a rejected fry cook in order to run a network. Any network, really.

Honestly, a fry cook with a half a brain could run a network with the decisions they make I swear.

I agree, part of the problem is that they come into the show thinking this is what we want and then they get a season finished and suddenly they don't have any idea what they want.

I don't expect people to fanservice me, either. I really don't. That's why I have fandom. I think SGA's writing staff didn't know what to do once they connected back to Earth. Then it just became the same plots revisited. Instead of making it hard for Earth to get back in touch, having half their people in both places, something. Something to shake up the basic foundations of their shows. Makes Atlantis a unique problem that would require more than six months to fix.

It would be nice to see them come up with something new, they connected with Earth and then they just got lost. A shake up would have been good, make it a challenge that they have to overcome. I would have liked to have seen that.

Their complacency is part of the problem, I think. They refused to admit that not only was the corner painted, but Hildy had glued plates everywhere, too. They couldn't see the barebones anymore. I think it would have been interesting if for a season the entire senior staff was stuck on Earth, trying to get back, while the others were on Atlantis adapting. The conflicts would have been interesting. Or have the ships die halfway between and they have to rig it to work, without help of Carter or McKay or any little grey dude, and it's either finish going to Earth or get back to Atlantis. Challenge their Earth morals against Pegasus in a way that isn't 'happy resolution.'

Yeah, I mean, don't get me wrong, I love McKay, but it seems that every time they run into a situation, McKay pulls them out just in the nick of time, it'd be nice to see the team have to find a way out without McKay's help, show us what they're made of. I would have liked to see have seen that.

Seriously. Like, let him be in the infirmary, unable to help or it'll kill him. He's more than the smart guy, yet not the whole cast. I would love to have seen more of Sheppard like in Season 1. It felt like they made him weaker. He was missing that edge. He could have helped to solve something, more than an aside, given his mathematical abilities and his mechanical wielding abilities in 'Grace Under Pressure.'

Yes, yes, yes! They didn't give Sheppard a chance at all in Season 1, he's intelligent, they mention it, but they don't use it. It really put him at a disadvantage and I would have loved to have seen them put him in a position where he has to come up with the genius solution to solve the problem. That would have been excellent, they each have their own strengths and weaknesses, but we tend to see McKay's genius, his strength as the answer to every dilemma they across, why not show Teyla's strengths or Ronon's, they're not idiots by any means.

I liked it when he was going against the Genii because it played up so many of his strengths. And then McKay became the wonder character and everyone suffered. Teyla and Ronon being on their home turf was pretty much ignored early on. And you know they'd have some awesome contacts. Teyla's got that empathy, which be useful in gaining trust for offworlders. Ronon would be awesome for incorporating his military training with Earth's. Meshing that with Teyla's. Learn the local strengths and how to defeat them. Play on it. It would have been good to have Sora be involved, incorporating those skills. Or working with Ladon. Something to keep the alliances up.

That would have been perfect, use Teyla's empathy and her contacts to their advantage, put Ronon's military skill and experience to good use. They wasted these two, they had so much to offer in both areas and had they used it they could have done so much. I agree, I loved when Sheppard went up against the Genii, we got to see what Sheppard the person he is, not only his intelligence but his leadership abilities and tactical thinking.

Ronon and Teyla's skills combined would have a huge asset for the Atlantis crew and would have opened up so many story lines to explore.

Teyla, especially a mom, reached a new level of understanding with the Pegasus people. More than just a leader of a group, she was witnessing firsthand what so many parent's worried about. Ronon was the best asset any planet had: he had survived the Wraith, everyone's common enemy. Think of the storylines that could have been spun, more than the snapshots, learning what makes them tick. How they can exploit the weaknesses. Sheppard is clever, extremely so. And it seems like he's very much self-made, even if he's from money. He's used everything given to become who he is and to become the soldier he is. Show that, through offhand comments. Show him working a word search and being done in under a minute. Give him something small that shows how much he really takes in. McKay isn't the only character. I know he's the most relatable to the writers, but the fact is, that he's not the only cast member. They created the characters and if they can't keep up, hire someone who can. Someone to help flesh out the really good ideas.

I agree, they could have really explored the characters and given them so much more to work with. Seeing Teyla become a mother and knowing that not only does she have to find a way to keep her people safe but now her own child safe. Working with Ronon to find ways to weaken the Wraith, giving the team ideas on how to hit them where it hurts to give them a better chance of defeating the Wraith. Showing Sheppard use his life experiences to become who he is would have been incredible.

Teyla, I think, would get twice as productive and protective of the children. All children. It's become that much more important. Ronon, who has large reason at stake - namely not more fox hunting, should be teaching. Using his tactile knowledge. It's not like there are many that survive the Wraith and aren't worshippers. You know he's been on enough Hive ships. And Sheppard's got an interesting background that he seems to be fighting. That'd make for some interesting conflict if he's brought to a wealthier society, maybe one the Wraith decided to leave alone, and had to reconcile the different views.

Screw that. What at a shitty half week. I get screwed by Atlanta laws on Tuesday. Lose the chance to leave a class without penalty because my school is reacting like freshman are delicate snowflakes that need handholding when changing their schedule and giving the people who are *not* newbies only two days to change their schedule. Silly me, having an accident on the last day. I should be ashamed. Then I'm forced to remember math...in an online astronomy lab course that I should remember but 3 semesters of math are just burn out territory. And now SGA. Fantastic 2 days. Really.

On the plus side? I don't need SciFi anymore. So I can work around that when I get my own place and just delete it from all my televisions. It'll be fabulous. SciFi: the Becky Connor of it all.
