I can has learner's permit!

Woo! I passed my permit test! I am now legally authorized to terrify [livejournal.com profile] ebrooklynw and [livejournal.com profile] akukorax as they try to help me learn how to drive in the state of California! I win!

...This annoucement would be much more awesome and much less pathetic if I were actually 15 1/2 and making it. *looks sheepish*

But yeah: Trin—coming soon to a road near you! Be afraid. Be very afraid!

*has no icons of cars so uses icon of puddlejumper*

That is AMAZING NEWS. So, when's yer dad's birthday again????

[identity profile] trinityofone.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Er...earlier this month?

But seriously, I think he is really sick of his current car and would leap at the opportunity/excuse to get a new one. I need 1) a proper license and 2) to be able to afford insurance, and I'm pretty sure he'll hand it over and skip off to buy a Volkswagen or something.

[identity profile] iamsab.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
You will, obviously, inaugurate your license and vehicle when you get your hands on said by driving over HERE and playing with us on the cool side of town.

Exciting!

[identity profile] trinityofone.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally! In fact, I want a big party where I can get really drunk...and then have someone else drive me home. ;-)

[identity profile] iamsab.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Count on it!

[identity profile] claire.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if it makes you feel any better, I also have my CA learners permit - and I'm 37 ;)

[identity profile] trinityofone.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It does, a little. ;-) How've you found learning so far?
aurora: (SGA John Fractured)

[personal profile] aurora 2007-07-27 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay!

(And I'm still licence-less as well. Have not even tried for the permit test yet.)

[identity profile] trinityofone.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad to have finally done it. I'm terrified about the actual driving but I really want the independence that comes with it. Plus, I love road trips. If I can drive I can take more of them! *g*

[identity profile] mirabile-dictu.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Congratulations! Though how you've managed without a car in southern Cal boggles me.

Good luck tackling the 405!

[identity profile] trinityofone.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
1) Buses.
2) Mooching rides off very indulgent friends & relatives.

...And now I can't stop thinking about the scene in Clueless about driving on the freeway. Or the one in L.A. Story. Oh dear.

Oh my.

[identity profile] trinityofone.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
You're quaking with fear all the way in Ireland, eh?
siria: (firefly - fear the monkeys!)

[personal profile] siria 2007-07-27 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I would not say 'fear', per se... though who am I kidding, I wouldn't even know how to start a car.

[identity profile] trinityofone.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you turn the...key thingy, yeah?

This is GOOD though! It means next time you come out here *bats eyelashes at you* I can drive you places! No more L.A. Metro! Plus—road trips of awesome! We could go along the old Route 66 to meet Cate in Chicago! =)

[identity profile] sheafrotherdon.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
HI HI YES ROUTE 66 TO CATE IS A GOOD IDEA!

Also, I know a person (i.e. me) who gives Farm in Iowa tours . . .

... okay!

(No, seriously, this idea is v. tempting.)

[identity profile] trinityofone.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you not TRUST ME with the OPERATION of a MOTOR VEHICLE? ;-)

Here's a question. Rodney:

1) Perfectly competent driver.
2) HATES driving & uses car service.
3) Doesn't really care about driving one way or the other.
4) Cannot drive in a straight line.
siria: (Default)

[personal profile] siria 2007-07-27 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I vote one, with a dash of three. He's really kind of indifferent to cars, I think, beyond them getting him from A to B, and scorns the Great American Obsession with cars. He drives some really tiny Japanese import which he selected solely for price and how many miles it gets to the gallon, a fact which John seems to regard as a direct affront to his masculinity.

[identity profile] trinityofone.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that probably the most correct, if not the most hilarious, option. I think cars is another topic John and Rodney should totally flirt argue about on the show.

...

Are there any Canadian cars?
siria: (sga - rodney biceps 2)

[personal profile] siria 2007-07-28 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
My extensive knowledge of the Canadian automobile industry1 reveals that mostly it's Canadian branches of American or Asian firms up there, but I did find mention of a Canadian-made car which seemed appropriately named.

1 I looked stuff up on Wikipedia.

Sometimes. (http://www.burtmanindustries.com/images/prodimages/s2k_gry_blk_carbon_start.jpg)

[identity profile] anjak-j.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh! Good luck with that.

I want to learn to drive, but I'm not allowed a licence at the moment on medical grounds.

[identity profile] trinityofone.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. I'm gonna need it...

I'm sorry you can't get a license right now. Um. At least you have a better excuse than what mine has been, i.e., "I'm scared and lazy"?

[identity profile] zabbers.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only just got my license, and I'm 24 (I got my permit in...May? and my license in June; granted, it's Oregon, and they don't make you parallel park, and I had tried to learn, once, years ago, in boarding school), and now I'm scooting around like an old pro like I'm actually comfortable doing it! Good luck!

[identity profile] trinityofone.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
That is encouraging! (Especially since they no longer make you parallel park on the CA test, too. *g*)

[identity profile] sonofzeal.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I got my Cali license on my sixteenth birthday. There was no parallel parking then. They had me pull over on an empty street and then back up a yard or so. Parallel parking is still the hardest part of driving for me.

[identity profile] sheafrotherdon.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
1) I was 28 when I passed my test, and 29 when I got my first car.

2) I could drive a tractor before I could drive a car.

3) My new car IS a puddlejumper in car form. Honda Civic baby!

[identity profile] trinityofone.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
1) I am finding it reassuring that I am not the only late-bloomer here. ;-)

2) Still can't drive a tractor. *sad*

3) That is very cool. You're liking it in other respects too? Because the Civic is one of the cars my dad is considering getting when he gives the Focus to me and gets himself something new.

[identity profile] sheafrotherdon.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
1) we're like fine wine. We improve with age.

2) there are tractors on the Farm tour :>

3) I LOVE IT. 40 mpg on the highway, silver, looks like a jumper, the stereo adjusts for road noise, the a/c adjusts for the speed you're traveling, handles like a dream, it is my one true love!

[identity profile] trinityofone.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
2) And corn? I miss running through corn.

3) May I relay to my father this excellent testimonial? *g*

[identity profile] stardustmajick.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I've had a learner's since I was 17 and... 22 now, yeah. It's good to know that I'm not the only one lacking a driver's license in the US. :D Congrats and good luck!

[identity profile] amireal.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Drivers in CA are--- insane. DO NOT FOLLOW THEIR EXAMPLES. *so says the NEW YORK DRIVER*

[identity profile] randomeliza.livejournal.com 2007-07-27 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Congrats on this rather belated event! I'm sure you'll be a better driver than 99% of the asshats on the road in California. (Not saying much, granted...)

\o/

[identity profile] moxie-brown.livejournal.com 2007-07-28 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
Argh, you beat me! I'm planning on finally getting my permit in August at the age of 26, after actually studying the Texas driver's manual instead of answering the online practice exams with "educated guesses."

But my parents are really putting their foot down on me getting a car, and I got them to promise to poney up the cash for the down-payment. I will be terrorizing Texas drivers while you wreak havoc in California!

[identity profile] hypothalamus.livejournal.com 2007-07-28 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
I got my permit today too! And I'm 18. It was interesting to stand there going "gosh, everyone here is 15."

Congratulations!

Congratulations!

[identity profile] darkrosetiger.livejournal.com 2007-07-30 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I got my driver's license at the age of 21, in Illinois, after failing the test twice in California. The day after getting it I moved to Boston and didn't drive for nine years.

So, go you!

Oh my god! I totally missed this. Awesome!!

[identity profile] feygan.livejournal.com 2007-08-11 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That's funny, I got my permit about the same time as you. I take the test September 4, and I buy my new car September 7 (stupidity on my part with auto loan apps filled too early, yeah.) Anyways, good luck!
