I re-watched that scene again just last night (really it was to see Castiel deus ex machina (for real!) and kick ass)--Zach said that it was true, they had lost the sword. What if they had only rediscovered it in time to stow Dean in the greenroom and keep him all safe? Like, they knew Dean would have some kind of role, just not exactly what, so they wanted to cover all their bases by making sure he could--and would--still fight.
