This past weekend, I accompanied [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve on her Castle and Defensive Fortifications class field trip to Wexford, along the southeast coast of Ireland. The day started out shakily as we recovered from the shock of discovering that Siria's nemesis, Big Gay Matt (Siria, remind me of the origin of this name: is it derived from the fact that while Matt is not gay, he bears a remarkable resemblance to a slightly-melted Ken doll?) had brought along as his guest my classmate Joseph, a.k.a. "Alice is an imperialist bitch!" Sometimes? The world makes far too much sense.

But ANYWAY, they proved remarkably easy to ignore, as Wexford was wonderful, and aside from a brief interlude of hail while we were safely ensconced at the Templars' Inn pub (if you're ever in Wexford, don't eat there: they overcharge), we had glorious weather. And I took an obscene amount of photos—literally, until my camera battery gave out on me. So come, see...

A 12th century lighthouse, a 14th century tower house, boats!, Siria being a dork, me being a bigger dork, a relative of a vaguely famous person, castle B&E, and a blow hole )

Whirlwind couple of days here, folks. [livejournal.com profile] dizzyditz visited from Berkeley, which was fantastic, as I haven't seen her in over a year. (*boggles* How is that even possible?) She looked great, and it was terrific getting to meet her BF and give them a somewhat spastic tour of Dublin.

A trio of goofy photos )

[livejournal.com profile] dizzyditz also brought lovely gifts from [livejournal.com profile] nenar and [livejournal.com profile] lordelessar (thanks, guys!) and four pounds of Skittles. Yes, four pounds. FOUR POUNDS. If that doesn't last me through June, I will be very worried about myself.

Now, some fannish stuff I keep wanting to mention, but have been too busy/tired/crazy to get around to:

1. I was really pleased and touched by the response to DADT, Damyata, Dayadhvam. There's more I want to say about this story and about politics in fanfic and literature, but as I am less with the coherence right now, it's gonna have to wait. But right now, in response to a couple of comments that are more about me and writing in general:

a) Yes, I read every single comment, and I appreciate them all, and if I were a better person, I would respond. But I want everyone to know that reader response does mean a lot to me, and the fact that you are all so wonderful and receptive is, while not the reason I keep writing (it's kind of compulsive--I don't think I would be able to stop), almost certainly the reason I keep writing so much. Which I enjoy, too, so thank you.

b) Yeah, I don't know how I'm writing so much and still working to get a degree, either. Crap. *waits for house of cards to tumble*

Finally, [livejournal.com profile] slodwick made an amazing cover for DDD. It gives me serious chills )

I don't know if I've said this before, but [livejournal.com profile] slodwick: if I ever write a decent original novel, and it gets published, I totally want you to do the cover for me. It'll be in the contract!

2. Everyone should check out Empty (Te Deum) which is a remix of my story The Hollow Men and which takes a lot of stuff I only scraped, only hinted at, and goes so much farther with it, to places so much deeper, so much more complex. It's a brutal story, and I mean that in the best possible way. You are awesome, anonymous person!

3. [livejournal.com profile] lillyjk wrote me monolith porn, which is based on this entry's icon which was made by [livejournal.com profile] slodwick based on something my brother said regarding European exit signs. Which is...probably the weirdest genesis of any story ever, but the result is smokin' hot.

4. Still working on the comment drabbles from the other day. Am very tired and have three essays due Monday (fuck.), but I will finish them. Fear not!

5. Er, something important, which I am no doubt forgetting. Ow, brain!

6. Oh yes, and excuse me for being a bit late jumping on this particular bandwagon, but indeed: Grant Jansky is officially the most adorable character ever. Just... *wants to hug him*
trinityofone: (Default)
First, everyone everyone everyone needs to go check out the beautiful banner (and new layout) [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve made for me: looooooooooooook! So. Pretty. *happy sigh*

Second, I pretty much tied myself down and made myself write something for [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic: Truth, and Other Literary Endeavors, McKay/Sheppard (do I really need to specify that every time? When do I write anything else?), far from my favorite piece ever, but my God, was I glad to have written it. Writer's block sucks.

Third, thanks to the fabulous [livejournal.com profile] stop, the mix I made for [livejournal.com profile] _rfa has a permanent home. You can check out the track list here, and then the .zip file is available here (right-click save): I Think We're Gonna Like It Here.

Fourth, boggle at the fuckin' fantastic icon [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve made for me! This is from a shop in Dublin that I have written about before, and have since taken:

Gratuitous photos of Sheppard's Hairdressing and Weir & Sons )

Now, dorky photos of me, randomeliza, and siriaeve being...well, dorks )

And the photo taurendur has been waiting for: me on top of Tara )

Finally, my two favorite places I've never been )

Sometimes I love the world.

So...I haven't read my friends list in about two weeks. Anything vitally important I need to know about? Anything completely trivial you want to tell me anyway?
trinityofone: (Default)
So. Paper: finished. New term: started. [livejournal.com profile] trinityofone: already exhausted.

But...my new History of the U.S. lecturer seems less dull than the last one, and one of my Irish Literature tutors is named Katie Brown. I make my own fun.

This weekend I made a lot of it, in spite of the paper which, quality aside, ended up being not a big deal at all, especially in proportion to the amount I angsted about it. On Friday, [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve and [livejournal.com profile] jarsy and I were going to go see Brokeback Mountain, but it was SOLD OUT. My reaction was a mixture of single, crystalline tear-sadness and sudden, extreme violence. [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve got it all on camera! )

OH NOES! I can never show my face in Temple Bar again!

Right. After we went for tapas, [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve and I ventured right back to the scene of my "Oh no she didn't!" moment to see my crush suitemate Aidan's band, Wally's Hut, play at Eamon Doran's. He had invited me special! He wanted me to see him play! I was so so very excited!

Actually, I think he pretty much just invited everyone he knew. [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve and I wandered around a bit during the dull first act, then jostled elbows with people by the stage while Wally's Hut played its short set. The crowd was very enthusiastic--there was even a panty-throwing moment--but the sound system sucked, and as cute as Aidan looked, I don't think Wally's Hut is going to be the next big thing. (You may all point and laugh when I turn out to be utterly, completely wrong, and Wally's Hut and Eamon Doran's get another circular record marker on the Dublin Rock 'n' Stroll.) Still, I got to see Aidan fuck play his bass, so that's something.

Also, I took some lame photos. )

Saturday, I wrote a draft of my paper ALL IN ONE DAY, because I rule. Then the gang--[livejournal.com profile] siriaeve, [livejournal.com profile] jarsy, [livejournal.com profile] jaaam, and [livejournal.com profile] lil_nibbler, as well as some other fine people; and yes, we should all get matching motorcycle jackets or something--got together to finally see the gay cowboys. And there was much rejoicing throughout the land! And by "rejoicing," I mean "crying into our nachos."

Sunday I edited my paper, and by "edited" I mean "watched SG-1."

And that was my weekend. To appropriate one of my favorite Irish expressions that I always sound stupid saying: Bless.

Ooh, and favor! Could somebody upload The Killers' Hot Fuss to YSI or something and link me? I have two tracks from it, "All These Things That I've Done" and "Everything Will Be Alright," and I can't stop listening to them. Please, if you can toss me some more, I would really appreciate it: I'm goin' nuts here. Thankyouthankyou.

In the last three days, I've:

1) Drunk absinthe;
2) Watched Boa vs. Python;
and 3) Gotten violently ill.

Not in that order. *g*

What happened was this: Friday I woke up with positively the worst case of food poisoning I--or, I am still somewhat convinced, anyone has ever had. I had to cancel my plans with [livejournal.com profile] jarsy, and spent the entire day unable to get out of bed except for when I was dragging my sorry self to the bathroom. What a perfect farewell gift from 2005! Finally, a little after 10 p.m. I made one last stumble across the room to turn out the light, then collapsed back into my bed and slept for over 12 hours.

I woke up feeling, if not Magically All Better, then much less likely to pass out when I tried to take a shower, which was one of Friday's more entertaining interludes. When [livejournal.com profile] jarsy texted me to make sure I wasn't dead before inviting my reanimated corpse to a New Year's party with her, I decided I was well enough to go based on the fact that I was really, really bored. I got the DART out to Glenageary and met up with [livejournal.com profile] jarsy, who fed me yummy Malaysian food--the first thing I'd been able to keep down in almost two days. Then we watched part of The African Queen (a McKay/Sheppard fic absolutely needs to be written with the line, "I pronounce you husband and husband. Proceed with the execution"), raided her parents' liquor cabinet, and walked down to Dun Laoghaire for the party.

trinityofone meets the Green Fairy--a tale of New Year's debauchery, with photos! )

The next morning, we summarily flipped off the entire concept New Year's resolutions by lounging around in our pajamas for hours. We watched the copy of Where the Heart Is that I had on my computer and cooed at David Hewlett in all his blond, babyish, bewinged glory; then [livejournal.com profile] jarsy finally got to see 'The Tower,' and our cooing turned to mockage. Eventually we decided we needed some fresh air, so we walked over to Dalkey, which is an adorable little town with a good bookstore and a nice, big pub. (If they built a movie theater, I could just about live there.)

I took some pictures of Coliemore Harbour )

Once we had proved that we were Good People, At One With Nature, we went back to [livejournal.com profile] jarsy's house and ate some cheese. [livejournal.com profile] jarsy's mom was making liver, so I tried some. I can now say with certainty what I once only assumed: liver is disgusting. Then it was back to the guest room for several more episodes of SGA. We watched 'Duet' and 'Grace Under Pressure'--a hell of a one-two punch, that. Then we decided that we needed some variety, so we walked over to [livejournal.com profile] jarsy's local DVD rental shop. We were browsing and--I swear to God--looking for a nice screwball comedy like The Awful Truth when, lo and behold, what did my little eye spy? Yes, indeed: Boa vs. Python! [livejournal.com profile] jarsy was almost too embarrassed to rent it, but how could she--or any sane person--resist such a blatant show of fate, not to mention the lure of teh Hewlett? So out we waltzed, meeting the delivery man on the way and thus arming ourselves with curry as we prepared to watch the fakest snakes ever poorly animated.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but--spoilers for 'Boa vs. Python' )

Eventually, I had to bid [livejournal.com profile] jarsy and the House of Hewlett Worship goodbye. I took the bus back into central Dublin, reading The Thorn Birds on the way. This was the last paragraph I read before I got off: )

Er, the bus. Before I got off the bus. *eg*

Anyway, it's been a pretty good resurrection so far. Happy New Year, all!
trinityofone: (Default)
I'm baaaaaaaack! I mean, hi.

So my family left this morning. Mostly, the visit went very well: I was happy to see them, they were happy to see me, and their greatest criticism was that I hadn't put up more posters in my room. (Me: I decided that I would rather be able to eat than decorate. My mom: Even poor peasants try to make their space homey. Why don't you clips some pictures out of magazines and make a collage? Me: Because last I checked, my life isn't part of the nouvelle vague. [Okay, I didn't really say that last bit.]) We did a lot of stuff and I had a great time, although I'm very much feeling that I could use a vacation from this vacation, especially since my dad gave me his cold.

But they gave me other stuff, too! We were doing Christmas as "See something you want in Dublin, tell us what it is, and we will buy it for you (within reason)" this year, so I got to choose everything myself. Prezzies:

1. Don't You Have Time to Think? by Richard P. Feynman (Feynman was very much the type of man I would like to see Rodney become in 20 years. Minus the thing with bongos. *g* )
2. Creating Web Pages in Easy Steps by Nick Vandome (Finally!)
3. Cordelia's Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold
4. The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough (*vbeg*)
5. Flannel PJs
6. A beautiful wool throw from the Avoca handweavers (Perfect for when I'm working at my computer--IOW, 98% of the time)
7. The complete first series of the new Doctor Who (It comes in a TARDIS! *geekgasm*)

I have excellent taste!

My parents also brought me presents from my aunt (A California Farmers' Market shirt) and my uncle (Nick Drake's Bryter Layter). Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] slodwick made me this )

The best thing, though, is that my parents brought me the correct kind of charger for my camera, so I can take pictures again! Many were taken over the last week, so I'm going to break them into smaller groups. I'll start you off with:

Dublin Signage )

More to come!

And finally, I'm at something like skip=200 bagillion, so if you said something to me in the last week, can you just poke me or link me or wave your arms and stomp your feet? I'm paying attention now, I swear. Well, mostly.
