Went to a party at E's last night with L, B, N, R, & K. E made Bloody Marys, which I had never had before: they taste kind of like mildly alcoholic cold tomato soup. I don't get it. We also messed around with E's new Wii. On the plus side: I am the motherfucking Wii hula-hooping champ. On the minus: L may have gotten video of my performance. *glances nervously at YouTube*

The highpoint, however, definitely came when we decided to play a skiing game that featured Downhill Slalom.

L: Isn't that a Jewish word?
Everyone: Huh?
L: Slalom. Like for hi or something.
Me (the party's sole resident Jew): You mean Shalom?
L: What? They're not the same?
Me: *falls off the couch laughing*
K: Quote of the night!

And indeed it was.

***

I feel I should mention, [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve has gotten me completely addicted to this song: I Still Remember by Bloc Party. I used it as a prompt and [livejournal.com profile] anna_luna drew this amazing picture. Now y'all need to listen/look and write us happy fic so I we can stop listening to this song over and over and dying of delicious bittersweet sadness.

If you need extra inspiration, check out the song's awesome video, which comes with the extra bonus of revealing that Bloc Party's lead singer, Kele Okereke, is incredibly hot.

I feel bad asking this, especially since I think I still owe ficlets from the last time I asked for mp3s (oy), but my dad has asked me to make a mix for my great-aunt’s memorial service on behalf of his cousin, who requested these songs, none of which I have:

In My Life -- The Beatles (What happened to my mp3 of this? I HAD this!)

American Pie -- Don McLean

Mrs. Robinson -- Simon & Garfunkel (I had this too, dammit)

Moon River (version not specified)

The Shadow of Your Smile (version not specified)

Turn! Turn! Turn! (Probably the version by The Byrds?)

Midnight (From Cats) ETA: Also known as MEMORY *facepalm*

I’ll Be Loving You Always (version not specified--probably NOT the George Michael)

From Fiddler on the Roof:
Sunrise, Sunset
Tradition
To Life

Edelweiss (from Sound of Music)

New York, New York (version not specified)

I can’t get Limewire to work, and while I’ll buy these on iTunes if I have to, if anyone has any of these songs, I would really appreciate it if you could pass them on. I can trade you…um, songs I do have? You’re all suddenly really into U2 and The Smiths, right?

Thank you so much. I shall now go back to freaking out about today’s election.

Are you achingly anxious for a new season of SGA to start? (I know I am! she says, now starting to feel rather like the host of an infomercial.) Luckily, [livejournal.com profile] trobadora and [livejournal.com profile] fluffyllama have come up with the perfect solution to the summer doldrums: [livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match! It's part game, part ficathon, and I really think it's going to be totally awesome. You should go check it out here.

I'm going to be heading up Team Angst ([livejournal.com profile] mcshep_angst) and the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] lamardeuse is heading up Team Romance ([livejournal.com profile] mcshep_romance). I want all of you to join my team! (ETA: Though don't join the team comms yet; wait till sign-ups on the main comm are over.) Some words about why Angst hurts so good )

You don't have to choose a side right away. Currently, there's an icon contest going on where you can celebrate McKay/Sheppard lovin' of all kinds. It's running till Tuesday night, so hurry over!

And now to get you in the mood, here's a Team Angst McShep Match Music Mix! Feel free to download wherever your sympathies lie! (Or even if you're just passing through going, "What the frick is she on about?")

Half-Gifts — A McKay/Sheppard Team Angst Mix )

Let's pretend, happy end
trinityofone: (Default)
1. Does anyone know if there's a community for Scrubs downloads? I miss Zach Braff!

2. I realized that I don't have any icons of Rodney smiling or looking happy--I'm all about the moody, angsty shots for some reason. Can anybody point me to some happy!Rodney icons? He's got such a pretty smile...

3. What is the general fandom opinion about giving first names (or last names) to characters that don't canonically have them? I try to avoid it as much as possible, but if you're seriously writing about these characters, it eventually becomes necessary. In their wonderful fics The Sincerest Form of Flattery and Identification, [livejournal.com profile] z_rayne and [livejournal.com profile] lamardeuse have set a precedence for Lorne and Parrish being called Nick and David, respectively (ETA: apparently, this originally came from [livejournal.com profile] casspeach--*tips hat*); this is one case where I really like there being a fanon rule, because there is no canon one, and it weirds me out when it's like, "Oh, he's Bob this week, is he?" I dunno, maybe I'm just a whore for consistency, but. Thoughts?

4. Hey, you know what I need? Tips on how to seduce my new Irish Literature tutor. He looks like Dylan Moran, he's SCOTTISH, he's cute and adorable and I want him ON ME. I'm serious. Really, really serious. How does one go about seducing someone? Like, in real life and not in my silly two-bit porn. EDUCATE ME.

*cough*

5. Yeah, and does anyone have Franz Ferdinand's You Could Have It So Much Better that they could upload for me? I'd be happy to upload something else in return. Or, um, I could add the fic prompt of your choice to my already lengthy backlog. The choice is yours!

...

His name is Peter. I...both hate and love feeling like this. Hate because nothing ever comes of it, but love because...I never stop hoping. Never.

So I was innocently scrolling through my friends list when my eyes slid past this post on [livejournal.com profile] u2 about U2 shows in Phoenix and Atlanta. Only--and I'm sure you can all see what's coming--I kinda misread the second part. "Wow!" I thought, "U2 is doing a show in Atlantis!"

Then I thought: "Now there's a crossover I secretly kind of want to really must never write."

And then I thought: "Actually, this may have already occurred because... [pic spoiler for 'Coup d'État'] )

I amuse and frighten myself.

Speaking of U2 and me being frightening, yesterday [livejournal.com profile] wychwood asked for my Top Five U2 Songs as part of the Top Five Meme (for the record: "Lemon," "Out of Control," "One," "Until the End of the World," and "If You Wear That Velvet Dress" or "Drowning Man," depending on my mood), then reciprocated with her own. I immediately turned into a freak of nature: "But those are so conventional!" (Like "One" isn't?) "You need to hear more exotic U2, STAT!" When I resumed semi-normal breathing patterns, I offered to send her some stuff. Unfortunately, most of my U2 .mp3s are protected (yes, I know you can get around that, but it is a pain in the ass and I am lazy) so what follows is mostly whatever fell into the center of a Venn Diagram crossing "Stuff that [livejournal.com profile] wychwood doesn't already have" and "Stuff of [livejournal.com profile] trinityofone's that's unlocked." Of course, it also falls into a third category: "Stuff that is really, really awesome."

26 random U2 songs, including a lot of live tracks, some rarities, some remixes, and oddly, something from October )

ETA: And a .zip file of all of them, if you are so inclined.
ETA2: Fresh .zip file, 'cause the other one all ran out and stuff.

Enjoy! Please tell me if the links run out, and if you want to share your random thoughts about any of these songs or about U2 or music in general, I would looooooove that. Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] nenar and [livejournal.com profile] caseymae: I know I still owe you mixes. I am working on them. Hopefully some of this can help tide you over...

Last night I had possibly the most disturbing dream ever. In it, I was lying in bed, drifting between being awake and asleep, my eyes half-closed, a pale bit of moonlight drifting in through the hideously ugly curtains. (Sadly, those are real and not part of the nightmare.) I had my hands tucked under the covers and was just drifting off to sleep when suddenly a HALF-DOZEN RATS scampered up over my body, right over my hands, under my chin, and down behind the other side of the bed. I yelped and started out of bed--only I was really awake now, yelping and starting out of bed. The line between dream and reality was so thin that I had to go hide in the bathroom for fifteen minutes before I was calm enough to spend any concerted time in the bedroom. Even now, I think I’d be half-convinced that I’d momentarily enacted out a choice scene from 1984 were it not for the fact that there is no space between my bed and the wall--nowhere for them to have gone. This was small comfort, especially at three o’clock in the morning.

So I got up and wrote more pony!fic, and also a few other comment ficlets that I’m going to clean up and post later. But first, I have to tell you about the three other dreams I had before the rats one--busy night last night, eh, subconscious?

First I dreamt that I was on LiveJournal, and all of you were convinced that I was dead. (Um, I’m not, by the way. Just clarifying: this post? Does not come from beyond the grave. It comes from Ireland.) Rather than do something sensible like log on and post a helpful HI! STILL ALIVE! or even a NOT DEAD--PINING FOR THE FJORDS! I just sat there, helplessly wringing my hands. So, yeah: dream me? Not too bright.

Then I dreamt that I was having a discussion with my father in which he was telling me something important about my brother, Daniel. Only about halfway through he stopped talking about Daniel my bother and started talking about Daniel Jackson and how his love for Jack O’Neill was so pure OMG! And I was like, jeeze, that isn’t even my fandom, get a clue, pops!

And then I had this really disturbing and sexually explicit dream about Ford )

So, yeah. My brain is weird.

Now, I was going to post a couple of dream-themed songs, but then I remembered that I made a Sandman mix a while ago--for [livejournal.com profile] monanotlisa, I think? And I never sent it to you? (I’m sorry!) Well, anyway: in that case, I figure there’s no reason why anybody who wants it shouldn’t get to enjoy it, especially after sitting through all this blather. So here it is:

A Handful of Dust - A Sandman Mix

Tracklist )

.zip file OMG, this took sooooooo long to upload. *hates yousendit*
backup .zip
2nd backup .zip
because I have to go to bed soon. *gulp*

Please let me know what you think! Or, y’know, when the file needs to be refreshed.

Oh yeah, and feel free to Freud me. *g*

ETA: Also, look at the AWESOME ICON [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve made me! Because JOHN IS THE CHOSEN ONE!!!
trinityofone: (Default)
•Just in case anyone missed it: Further evidence that Neil Gaiman is God.

I so want an icon that says "Oh, bitchcakes" now. Of anybody. Really.

•Question: does anyone have an mp3 of "Carry That Weight" by The Beatles that they could send me? I'd Limewire it, but Trinity's network doesn't allow peer-to-peer sharing, yadda yadda yadda. I'd appreciate it muchly. ETA: I realize that it is pointless to be coy. The reason I'm asking is that the version I have cuts off at the end, and I'm not sure if it's supposed to do that, like "I Want You (She's So Heavy)," or if my copy's just mean. So, yeah: satisfy my curiousity; mock my lack of musical knowledge. (I was born in 1984, what can I say?)

•I wish I were in L.A. so that I could buy [livejournal.com profile] mciac a drink. For even more reasons than usual.

•Finally, I've been thinking it would be self-indulgent masturbatory fun to do a commentary track for one of my fics. The only question is...which one??? Obviously, as with all important decisions, I should defer to a highly-scientific LiveJournal poll.

Help decide which SGA fic I'll write commentary for!

The stories are here.

[Poll #629733]

If you have any specific questions that you want me to try to address in the eventual commentary, please comment and let me know. *is super curious*

(And yes, I know I left off "And Time," "Major Ted," and "Teeth." But I could only list 15 options and they're really short, yo! If you're violently angry, feel free to yell at me. But not too much; I'm fragile.)

I probably won't be able to actually do this until I finish my [livejournal.com profile] undermistletoe fic and the whatsit I started for the latest [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic challenge, but week-after-nextish, maybe?

Also, I really want to do commentary for the story that honestly is the popular favorite; with that in mind, do you think it's appropriate to pimp this poll on [livejournal.com profile] mckay_sheppard or [livejournal.com profile] sga_noticeboard? Argh, I really need someone to write a Fandom Miss Manners...

Okay, back to footnotes.
trinityofone: (Default)
So. I have a draft of the Why We Slash paper. (Yes, I know I haven't fully finished responding to the responses, but I'm really running out of time here, and y'all already know that I suck.) I don't hate it as much as I initially did, but I'm still not sure that it actually, you know, makes sense or says anything. I have to turn it in the day after tomorrow; is there anyone who'd be willing to look it over? Normally, I'd ask my mother, but despite her professed interest in the topic, um, no. It's about 10 pages long, and uses the phrase "blow job" more than any other academic paper I have ever written. (Which is to say, once.)

I also have to bang my Victorianism paper into shape. This is the one that's sekritly about how Holmes and Watson are so very, very gay for each other, and...I'm sensing a pattern here. And the scary truth is, I have written a lot of papers about--sexuality? homoeroticism?--in literature. I mean, there was the Portrait of a Lady paper about how Isabel Archer is incredibly, incredibly repressed, and how the only person in the world who possibly knows more about repression is Henry James himself. Not to mention the one about how in East of Eden, Lee is the Eve to Adam Trask's Adam. (And I still want Lee/Adam, people! You litslash folks are falling down on the job!) I guess you could say I've identified my area of interest. Now what do I do with all this? I mean, like, in life. *deep thoughts*

Confidential (by which I of course mean completely, gloriously public) to:

[livejournal.com profile] plainsong_x: I have acquired the book! THE BOOK HAS BEEN ACQUIRED BY ME! And the edition with the cool cover that you liked, too. (We're talking Exquisite Corpse here, for all you people who are BRAZENLY LISTENING IN on our PRIVATE CONVERSATION.)

[livejournal.com profile] isiscolo: So I went to the bookstore today specifically to get a computer book. I got there, I poked around in fiction and history for a while, I picked up the above piece of serial killer wacky fun, and then I walked out, having completely forgotten what had been my sole purpose in going there in the first place. *headdesk* So, goal for tomorrow, really! Seriously, though: all I need is a tweed jacket with patches on the elbows and I'd be the quintessential absent-minded professor. (Oh, and a degree. One of those might be helpful.)

And [livejournal.com profile] sdraevn: Damn you! You've got me listening to Bon Jovi and liking it! *is ashamed*

No, seriously: her John/Rodney mix is fantastic. Check it out: Weird About Each Other.

I should probably do some actual work now. But yeah, please let me know if I can put your mad beta skillz to work. Thanks!

ETA: Okay, I think I'm cool on betas! Thank you all so much!
trinityofone: (Default)
You're not sending me my comments again!

Is anybody else still having this problem, or am I special?

...Of course, you could comment to tell me that I'm very special (yeah--special needs; see, I can anticipate your pathetic stabs at humor *g*) and I wouldn't know, would I, because LJ IS NOT SENDING ME COMMENTS.

Or actually, I would know, because I've been checking back every five minutes since LiveJournal defied logic and reason and actually found a way to make me MORE neurotic. Um, congrats?

And because this post is otherwise completely pointless, and because I uploaded them already to send to my mother, some random mp3s:

Stargate Atlantis OST - Joel Goldsmith

.zip file. Many thanks to the folks on [livejournal.com profile] stargate_eps for this.

Sonnet 130 - Alan Rickman

a.k.a., "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun," a.k.a., "Shakespeare may have been a genius, but Alan Rickman's voice is teh sex."

The Raven - Christopher Walken

Dude, it's "The Raven." Read by Christopher Walken. If you're not already cracking up, well... *condescending pat* There, there.

Blue Oyster Cult and More Cowbell - Christopher Walken and the Cast of SNL

I have a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell!

...And for LJ to fix its comment notifications.

Thank your lucky stars, my friends. 'Cause I was going to write a long, bitchy post about how all the people in my Victorianism class are idiots, but you have been saved--saved!--by the amazing and talented [livejournal.com profile] slodwick, who made my afternoon and possibly my life by creating a gorgeous cover for my story Something Wicked.

Look at this, I don't care if you don't like SGA, it's beautiful and wonderful and just *Guh* )

Really, it's just exactly how I pictured it, like [livejournal.com profile] slodwick somehow got inside my head. (Yeeeaaaah, it's kind of messy in there--sorry about that.) Go tell her how fabulous it is!

Ahh. *happy sigh* I'm having wonderful delusions of being a published author now.

As for the rest of my day, basically I endured the aforementioned tutorial from hell and--okay, I can't help myself, I have to give you a sample, because my blood is still boiling. We read Dracula, which is a tough read in a post-Buffy world; all the suspense is based on not knowing what's going on, but anyone who hasn't been living under a rock knows that the Count vants to suck your blood, so reading it is basically 400 pages of going, "Hello, guys? He's a vampire," before yawning your way through the unspeakably dull climax in which the big scary Count is killed in his sleep. All right, fine. Just 'cause the book is boring doesn't mean the discussion has to be--we could have talked about lots of interesting things, broken down precisely why the narrative structure fails, and mocked Jonathan Harker for being a wuss who was once portrayed by Keanu Reeves. BUT NO. Instead there had to be 45 million variations on this conversation:

Student: Um, when Dracula bites people, I think it might be, you know, kind of sexual?
Tutor: Huh, I hadn't thought of that!
[livejournal.com profile] trinityofone: *cries*

So instead I made a music video in my head. And damn, I wish I were a vidder, because this is, like, the most cracktastically awesome idea ever. Ahem. Get this:

Genius of Love to clips from 'Aurora.'

I mean, just listen to it! And check out these lyrics:

What you gonna do when you get out of jail? I'm gonna have some fun! )

Yes, the crack I am on IS very good, thank you for asking.

*Seneca. Because I am pretentious as well as crazy. Whee!
trinityofone: (Default)
Okay, LJ ate my last attempt to post this. Trying again...

Holy moly, it's something SGA-related that my non-SGA friends might actually be interested in! Quelle shock!

But yeah, basically I posted a S1 mix over at [livejournal.com profile] _rfa. You should check it out! You may still be scratching your heads re: all this Stargate stuff I've been blathering on about, but free music...free music is universal.

This is the tracklist:

I THINK WE'RE GONNA LIKE IT HERE

1. Humans From Earth - T-Bone Burnett
2. The Glittering Prizes - Television Personalities
3. Race Against Time - U2
4. Special Death - Mirah
5. Bless the Children of the World - Randy Newman with Don Henley
6. Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine - The White Stripes
7. Children of the Revolution - T.Rex
8. Once in a Lifetime - Talking Heads
9. Death Storm - Christopher Young
10. In the House—In a Heartbeat - John Murphy
11. Search & Destroy - Iggy & The Stooges
12. Bau-Dachöng - The Virgin Prunes
13. Norwegian Wood - The Beatles
14. All Tomorrow’s Parties - The Velvet Underground
15. Auf Achse - Franz Ferdinand
16. Army Dreamers - Kate Bush
17. Rachael’s Song - Vangelis
18. Don’t Fade Away - Milla Jovovich

There are also pretty pictures! Pretty pictures of pretty boys (and girls) are universal, too.

Now I'm going to veeeeerry slooooowly respond to feedback...or possibly read more Sherlock Holmes. Because sometimes, I kinda suck.
trinityofone: (Default)
I have the day off from work, so I slept 'til eleven, didn't change out of my pajamas, and am sitting around drinking tea and doing memes. I bet you wish you were me.

These are pretty entertaining, though.

From [livejournal.com profile] girl_clone, the iTunes Eight-Ball meme: Put your iTunes on random, then ask it each question before going to the next song.

My iTunes has some serious issues )

From about a zillion people, the Icon Paring Generator meme: about which all I have to say is, curiosity may not have killed the cat, but you can bet it seriously disturbed it. I started doing this meme just to see what I got, and the results were, unsurprisingly, terrifying. But the truly shocking bit was that I immediately started thinking of ways I could make these cracked-out combinations work. )

Now if only I could think of some way to do Rodney/the huge lemon from my “She wore lemon” icon. Before, that icon was supposed to represent the intangibility of desire (and other equally deep things); now it’s just kinda funny. Poor Rodney.

Speaking of which...I now have multiple ideas for completely cracked-out SGA fic. At least one involves aphrodisiac dog slobber. I need help.
trinityofone: (Default)
Worked all day on my Blade Runner paper yesterday and finally finished a draft around 1 a.m. 26 pages, 7,414 words. And my conclusion kicks ass. )

The most amusing part of the whole experience was when I took a dinner break. I got my pizza and settled down in front of the TV, figuring I'd watch something to take my mind off my work. I turn on the TV--and guess what's on? (Hint: It wasn't Gone With the Wind.) I actually watched it for a while, because as sick as I was of writing about it, it's a fucking great movie.

Today I've wasted most of the afternoon downloading tracks from [livejournal.com profile] audiography because the theme this week is movies, and I want everything. My favorite catch, though, has been two Harry Belafonte tracks from Beetlejuice, which I'll pass on to you:

Day-O (Banana Boat Song)
Jump in the Line

I love Beetlejuice and I'm especially amused by these because when my brother was little, the only way we could get him to fall asleep in the car was by playing this soundtrack.

Now...A CONTEST! Whoever can make the shortest, Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon-style link between Blade Runner and Beetlejuice wins! GO!

1. Walking from my house to campus, wearing a long skirt and a shoulder bag, managed to have bag rub against skirt in such away that it rotated entirely about my person and back to where it started--twice.

2. Slight shower enabled me to for the first time utilize my white umbrella with a map of the London Underground on it. Just call me Richardrichardmayhewdick!

3. On the way home, stopped at Walgreen's to purchase blank CDs for my clinically insane Make a Mix CD for Everyone in My Creative Writing Class project. Also sunk to new low by purchasing Marie Callender's chicken pot pie: delight of my childhood, bane of my arteries. Don't tell anyone.

4. Last night had dream that something horrible is going to happen at this year's Bay to Breakers (annual San Francisco race/cross-dressing event). Would be worried, except suspect my dreams to be anti-prophetic, or else would spent whole life discussing produce with The Edge, almost-but-not-quite having sex with Spike, and running away from things. A lot.

And that, aside from the three and a half hours of television ahead of me, has been my day. Sigh.
trinityofone: (Default)
Running Up That Hill - Placebo

And, for those of you who don't know it, the (in my opinion, far superior) original:
Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) - Kate Bush

As my roommates know (I've only made them listen to it 10,000 times) I loooooooove this song.

From [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4. Take the first 25 random songs from your playlist. Add "In My Pants" to the title.

Talking Heads - Memories Can’t Wait In My Pants
Sugar Ray - Every Morning In My Pants
U2 - Lemon In My Pants
