I'm also jumping into the middle of this, 'cuz it caught my eye.

I'm horrible at thinking up happy endings, which is one reason why I am so pleased with the scenarios other people come up with. \o/ Maybe I'm just a pessimist, but I think Castiel's ending story will be bittersweet at best. He may gain something he desires, but he'll lose something significant in the process. Even though I love him to freaking pieces, I don't think I could be satisfied with a story where he gets everything he wants. (In other words, he stays an angel, Heaven forgives him, he gets to stay with Dean, and Dean magically lives forever.) That's a lot to ask for, some of what he wants directly conflicts with other things he wants, and any ending resembling the "Cas gets everything!" idea should definitely have some very good writing behind it that wasn't gratuitous.

The part that caught my eye here was the bits about souls that you two tossed back and forth, because this is something that I've thought about quite a bit. Yes, there are obviously souls in the world of SPN, but I think I've started thinking of angels as souls, or at least they're something similar. That's not to say I think angels were human once - it's just that they seem pretty much incorporeal on this plane without a vessel.

When Dean died, his body stayed on earth but his soul went down to Hell. Souls in hell eventually become demons, which also need "vessels" in order to truly interact on the same plane as humanity. It is assumed (but has never actually been said) that most souls will go to heaven when they die. But when angels themselves are killed, where do they go? To me, it came across as angels just being gone when they're killed, similar to what happens to demons when they're killed with the Colt or Ruby's knife.

*scratches head* I might be confusing myself here, but I've just gotten myself stuck in this mindset that angels and human souls are similar, but cast from different molds. In SPN lore both were created by God, so who's to say he just didn't make two different versions of the same thing?

No, I have no idea why I got stuck on that concept so much.
