Today's Team Angst story over at [livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match pulls off one of my favorite (and one of the hardest) storytelling tricks: it manages to find some real, genuine hilarity inside a brutally angsty, brilliantly executed premise. In Rock, Paper (No Scissors), John and Rodney are locked in an alien jail and can only communicate through notes snuck past the guards. The author has John and Rodney's voices DOWN, and both of them are their wonderfully snarky and witty selves even in the face of horrible danger, and in the face of what's happening between them. Even better, the author repeatedly finds way to reinterpret the theme of "correspondence" beyond the original premise, like a composer producing beautiful variations; the resulting story is so smart, so clever, so funny AND heart-wrenching, it leaves me in awe every time I read it.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm enthusiastically checking the "This story is awesome and made of win" box.

Go read Rock, Paper (No Scissors) and check it yourself!
