I'm a huge fan of The Thief books, and I'd recommend giving the second a try; I think it might be my favorite in the series (it's definitely close), and I think it's helped by not being in first-person. That being said, as a series, I think its strengths lie more in political intrigue than characters, so I'm not sure the problem of connecting with characters will improve in later books.
