I guess it was almost like reading a weird foursome fic... with animals. So, yeah. That was the negative part.

I can understand why your reaction is negative, but that's not a negative for the story. Daemons *are* a bit squicky, and IMHO the best thing about Pullman's trilogy (which also IMHO fell apart toward the end) is that he gets you so used to a worldview in which *not* having a daemon is squicky. Really, *really* squicky.
Part (again, IMHO) of what this story is about is how easy it is to flip between "normal" and "squicky", and how "natural" is *both*.
