I'm, like, the one fangirl in the world who didn't like HDM, so I nearly didn't read this, but damn I'm glad I did. Lovely fusion, it works wonderfully, the choice of daemons, and how they interact with the chars, the weaknesses and the strengths of them (John and Rodney both with the unshakable emotional support they never had before...) And it makes me appreciate the world-building of the books that much more (I greatly admired the writing and concepts of the trilogy; it was the chars which left me cold. With chars I love, now, I enjoy it far better!)
