I just... keep remembering what my ex-parish priest said about one of our priests who left - that every single day since he left the order, he has regretted that decision. I don't see John as being that extreme... but you're never going to stop missing it. Not when it's been your whole life for so long.
I like your idea, though! Working still with and within the Church, I can definitely see that.
