And you know, for all of the implied Rodney-scorn at the church and religion and all else that he put up, he's really being remarkably respectful of John's position which totally rings with me for Rodney. It's that way in which he mocks the military as an institution but always, always calls John by his rank. Excellent.
Scrolling through the comments, and this really hit me. Exactly right. Rodney loves debate and thought and intelligent discussion. He has problems with institutionalized thought, but not with the person, although he might challenge them. I think you're right that John's rank is a sign of respect - it's also a sign of maintaining some professional distance. Very astute comment.
