This is really really interesting, and you definitely hit the nail on the head with the 'taboo' thing, I have a friend who is a major slasher and she thrives on the scandal of it all, and one day we were driving around trying to think of the most scandalous pairings possible.
Personally I don't think of slash fic as all that different from het fic (you know, besides the obvious), I just see characters that interact really well with each other, and have great chemistry, gender be damned. But then, I don't really think about it all that much...
