Commitment-phobes don't go on one-way trips to other galaxies, so we can probably count that out. (Unless it's like, really narrowly commitment-phobic focusing on personal or sexual relationships. Which goes places I'm not going to.)
And okay, he managed to fend off the girl in "Hive" so he's not letting his dick lead him around.
Ooh! Maybe he has a Madonna/Whore complex? Because of all of them, Chaya's the one I can believe he didn't actually sleep with. (Because he had his jacket on instead of over his arm and she totally popped out two seconds later in her unwrinkled white dress.) Because maybe he felt the glowy-ascended sex was somehow more holy or less debasing than the actual act? But it totally doesn't explain why he's so cheap in situations where he shouldn't be. Like this one, which I still haven't seen yet. (I *heart* spoilers like gold.)
Or...maybe he and Rodney broke up again and he's having revenge sex?
Or...maybe his dad was a womanizer and John walked in or heard about too much of it and tried valiently to comfort his mother while she cried the nights his father was in town and didn't come home. That would back up the Madonna/Whore problem. Damn you and your contagious Catholic kinks.
