I don't have so much of a problem with the inner monologue, what I do is accidentally out myself as a TOTAL GEEK by being unable to not answer random questions and statements of ignorance. Like Monday, when the tutor was talking about the Mars rovers, and mentioned Spirit but couldn't remember the other name, and my mouth opened and "Opportunity!" came out, and everyone looked at me funny, and I was all, hey, did I just say that? And then they asked me what I'd said, and I had to explain, and I'm sort of mumbling and want to hide RIGHT NOW, and... yeah. I do that a lot.
Awww. I like Neal Stephenson, but yes, he isn't exactly the easiest writer to follow... What have you tried, if anything? Because some of his stuff is easier than others.
