[livejournal.com profile] forcryinoutloud and I are thinking of running an SGA Classic Movie Ficathon, in which participants would get to pick a film from the '30s-'60s and write an SGA story based on the movie itself, or extrapolated from the summary and taken in the crazy direction of your choice. (The ones I'm really hoping get written? The Shop Around the Corner, His Girl Friday, North by Northwest, The Searchers...well, and loads more, really.) So, what we want to know is: would you all be interested in something like that?

[Poll #704713]

Any other thoughts? Questions? Suggestions? I've never run a ficathon before, so I'd really appreciate any advice/words of caution/hysterical pointing-and-laughing...

you gals have only mentioned classic movies. what about classic musicals? I am more familiar with musicals from 30s-60s than movies. I just want the plots, not the songs! *g*

Dibs on The African Queen!

(I - I promise I'm still working on the Red Shoes AU. I'm just so in love with the idea of a scruffy Sheppard as Bogart and McKay as Katherine Hepburn. Who wouldn't be?)

I think that a challenge tends to herd in a community with other challenges, breeding and keeping a lookout for predators, while a ficathon is a solitary beast with its own territory community.

I hadn't even thought of that! Brilliant. Totally brilliant.

Man, the possibilities with this ficathon! I am wildly in love with the idea.

The possibilities are killing me, too! I WANT TO WRITE THEM ALL.

Bringing Up Baby is on there, BTW. I hope someone does it. I hope it involves a tame Wraith.

It's totally on the list. *wonders if I can sooper-sekritly reserve it for you*

Also, I purposely left The Red Shoes off the list, 'cause I knew you had it covered. *g*

I am overwhelmed by the number of cool ways His Girl Friday could be done. It makes me...kinda giddy.

What's the difference between a ficathon and a challenge?

Um. I don't know.

Heee! That would, in fact, be totally awesome.

Possibly the best part of this ficathon would be having to watch the assigned movie again. Possibly again and again, depending on the movie. ;)

I have like nothing to contribute. Nothing!

But I totally get what you mean with the tutorial. For mine, I was stuck with 4 most boring (omg, i'd rather be dead boring) people... at least the tutor was okay.

Whee, Philadelphia Story's on there as well. Really, I should just put: "anything starring Cary Grant."

Or Katherine Hepburn. Or Jimmy Stewart.

I hope we can make this work. Because as an idea? It WINS.

I think if I rewrote Roman Holiday I would be forced to make it end happily.

OR make it RONON holiday. Hahahahahaha. I don't care about happy endings for Ronon.

Oh, hey, question/suggestion: have you got The Thin Man on that list? Because I would love to see someone do that with Sheppard and McKay as Nick and Nora, of course.

Oh, I am the happy smiling mistress of volunteering too much! I love it! I hate me! I love it!

Oh, God. Don't mind me, I'll be over here drinking green potion and taking notes on The African Queen (which is so going to be The Athosian Queen when I'm done with it).

I have always operated under the assumption that ficathons were more specific, with prompts possibly being assigned or "traded" (like holiday ficathons/secret santas), and challenges are looser, with more general prompts given to everyone (like title/theme challenges).

If... that helps at all.
