I wrote some silly fic based on the 'Elevator' and 'Pool' promos. So this is promo fic, and it's also lunchbreak fic, as I started it during my lunchbreak yesterday and cleaned it up during today's. So...don't expect any major depth here. I just really needed a break from my angsty cowboy AU.

Title: Things to Love
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Spoilers: Based on the SciFi channel ‘Elevator’ and ‘Pool’ promos, so spoilers for those, I guess.
Length: ~1200 words
Summary: After their respective adventures, John and Rodney meet up again.
A/N: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve for looking this over, and to [livejournal.com profile] randomeliza for making me want to write it.

Things to Love

John had wandered away from the pool tables and was wondering if, since Rodney was taking so long, he should go ahead and help himself to a beer. Anything had to be better than staring impatiently (he wasn’t going to think longingly) at the door, and he’d already run out of patrons to whom he could offer his helpful advice. A beer would give him something to occupy his hands and his mouth…but before he had even completed the turn toward the bar, he caught sight of Rodney coming in the door, wide-eyed and flushed. It was an odd expression, a strange mix of adrenaline and glee, and as Rodney caught sight of him it broadened into a wide smile.

“I love you,” Rodney said.

John froze in his tracks, his answering smile stuck in an awkward half-formed position on his face. He could feel the tips of his ears turning scarlet.

“I love you,” Rodney said again—bright, declarative. “And I love being on Earth. I love being on Atlantis. I love—ooh!” John backed off the second he realized that Rodney had spotted the tray of little nutty things on the bar. “I love these little nutty things…what are they called again?”

“Little nutty things,” John said—echo and answer. Then he said, “Um, Rodney…”

“I just almost died,” Rodney said, crunching merrily. “It was awesome!”

“You almost...what?” Certainly, he seemed to have suffered some sort of head injury. “Do you really need me watching your back in downtown Colorado Springs? And also,” John added, belatedly. “Keep your voice down.”

Rodney paused in his chewing, shoving the nuts over to the side of his mouth, a move that made him resemble an overgrown squirrel. “Aren’t you going to ask how I nearly met a messy and unworthy end?”

“No,” John said. They were still standing at the corner of the bar, closest to the doorway, and John put a guiding hand on Rodney’s arm, hoping to steer him over to the corner, where he’d be less likely to share secrets of national security and declarations of big gay love with the world. “I figured you’d just tell me.”

“Falling elevator,” Rodney said. He sounded oddly proud.

He was also completely resistant to being led, which really, wasn’t so surprising. The surprising thing, John thought, was that he, John, was willing to follow—around the corner and into the bathroom, the bright beam of Rodney’s grin like a torch, lighting the way.

“Why were you standing under an elevator?” John asked—stupidly, and Rodney rolled his eyes.

“I wasn’t. I was in an elevator. It fell. I stopped it. Saved a guy’s life. Piece of cake!”

Rodney’s eyes darted off to the side for a moment, distracted. “I love cake, too, by the way.” Then his gaze re-focused. “And sex.” He backed John up against the wall. “Let’s have sex in the bathroom!”

To be honest, John really couldn’t think of any other reason they had had to go in here. He nodded, then reached forward to grab Rodney’s waist. He paused, though, holding him: thin space between their bodies, the unfilled air painful and vibrating in its emptiness. “Just exactly how high on endorphins are you?”

Rodney calculated. “Seven out of ten?” he hazarded. “Maybe a six, with an upgrade for the sheer unexpectedness of it.” He tilted his head. “I want to suck on your neck.”

“I approve of sucking,” John said, and he let the space between them collapse.

It should freak him out, John realized, what Rodney had said, but really what he felt was pleased: with this, with them, with Rodney’s electrifying exuberance and his own rock-solid pool strategy. John had approached a stranger in a bar instead of the other way around, and he’d set out to chat and they’d really just chatted; and Rodney had survived the perils of a Colorado Springs office building in time to walk into a public place and tell John he loved him. And it all made sense. The world had never made sense before, but it did, suddenly; it had changed while he was away. Now he could work a hand under Rodney’s shirt and kiss his wide, warm mouth, and it all fit. Everything had slotted into place when he wasn’t looking; when he was across the universe worrying about grander things, the little ones had all solved themselves. He’d given the cue ball a firm tap, and the others had slid obligingly into their pockets.

John smiled against Rodney’s mouth and tucked a hand into the back pocket of Rodney’s pants, squeezing his ass and pulling him flush against his body. He bent his leg and Rodney slipped up against it, rubbing himself as his fingers tangled in John’s hair.

Between kisses, on each reluctant breath, they were tempering the pauses with shared smiles and laughter. Rodney brushed the fingers of his right hand across John’s scalp; the left hand he splayed, warm and weighty against John’s chest.

“Hmmm,” Rodney said.

“Hmm-hmm,” John answered.

When Rodney’s hand swept lower, flicking over John’s buttons, John was very nearly regretful. But one touch of Rodney’s fingers on his dick, and John was leaning his head back against the tile wall, barely able to remember the meaning of the word. Rodney cradled him lightly, hardly moving at all, giving John time to find Rodney’s own cock as he teased the head of John’s with a circling thumb. They shifted around each other, slow and stupid and languorous, all of Rodney’s nervous energy and John’s rigidity smoothed out by the touch of skin on skin. Rodney touched his forehead to John’s shoulder and mumbled happiness into his neck. Their hips rocked against each other and their hands moved, simple motions. This wasn’t fancy, but it was real.

John’s vision was fuzzing out, a pleasant blur of color, when the door of the bathroom banged open. Both he and Rodney turned toward the sound, blinking stupidly; they didn’t even try to move from their incriminating position. Neither did the couple in the doorway. John took in the tumbled bra strap, the raised, rosy mark on the smooth patch of shoulder, the mussed clothing and hair tangled from the tug of fingers. “Hey,” he said.

After a moment, the male half of the intruding couple managed a little wave and a “Hi.”

“Try the ladies’ room,” John suggested.

“Yeah, okay,” said the guy. The girl shot them one last curious glance, but she followed her companion out the door.

“Friends of yours?” Rodney asked. His voice sounded breathy. John was pleased that, even after the interruption, Rodney was quickly able to regain his equilibrium and focus and return his attention to the task at hand. But then, Rodney always had been good at adapting to strange situations.

And not just adapting: he had the capacity to reshape them, make them his own. Elevators and spaceships and bombs could fall, and he could stop them, freeze them in mid air.

“What can I say?” John kissed Rodney’s mouth, and they moved against each other, with each other, until they both stilled and stiffened and came. Release: curling together and breathing slowly, in and out. “People love me.”

“It’s a crazy world,” Rodney said, too sated to put any real edge behind it.

“And you love it,” John reminded him. The trailing movements of their hands were to no purpose now, but they drifted anyway, touching and feeling, just because they could.

All of a sudden, it was as if anything was possible.

I am probably in the minority in that I really don't like the promos (I LOVE the idea, but not the execution, at all. Well, I liked Sam's but the rest filled me with despair.)

But, omg, the fic. I suspect the next time I see the promo I will have a huge and giant grin on my face just remembering this.

I've been on internet cafe and library computers for the last week, so this was the only thing I've had time to read in AGES - and it was lovely and made me squee. Oh, Rodney!

I've been debating over which of the promos I like the best; clearly the solution to my problem is this- both of them squished together, plus porn. *nods* Also, the last line is fucking priceless.

Uh oh, this whole comment is just quotes now. But, uh, I love those lines. This was just great, and so pretty, and just perfect. And I agree with those who said it: I didn't even think of fics based on the two promos (especially on sticking them together), but now that you've done it, it seems so right.

This is very silly. But also amusing. I especially like the bit where the pool-player accidentally bursts in on them *g*. And Rodney loves everything!

aww, nice. The promos make much more sense now! *g* I really liked Rodney high from the near-death experience, him babbling about John and the things he loves because that's just so Rodney-esque.

This "they moved against each other, with each other," and this " Release: curling together and breathing slowly, in and out. " are my fave lines. One feels the love, intimacy (not literal "intimacy", but the more broader meaning of the word) and so many other emotions all packed together in a few words. I don't know how to explain why I like those lines, but ahem I do.

Thank you.

Oh, I like this a lot. A lot a lot a lot. For the one thing, those promos were just begging to have their dots joined up and you did so gorgeously, and for another, well, just GUH. heh.

I love "letting the space between them collapse" - something about collapse in that sense really does it for me, and the hot, well, everything in the bathroom, and both of them just being so right with the universe and all the good happy god-your-stories-are-good type hand flailing you can imagine, because, yes. Thank you so much for sharing this.

Aw - I loved the promo spots, and I loved this too. Little nutty things and over-sized squirrels. *g* Rodney full of delight at being alive, and John so pleased with himself for his pool-table intervention. And yay for hot (yet also langorous) bathroom sex, interrupted by pool table people who just go about their business. Sweet and lovely, and you've made me grin. Stupidly grin. ♥
