There's something epic about them, you know? I can't think of another band quite like that, where all the original members have been there since the beginning and they've been together for so long. I mean, they met in high school, and Bono and The Edge still live next door to each other. It's incredible.

Yes, Neil wrote a bio of Duran Duran. I, too, was shocked. Well, not really, since I believe Neil used to write for magazines, but seeing his later work? Quite different subject matter.

And just think what would have happened if no one answered that little post about joining a band.

The best is that, with the exception of Larry, none of them were that exceptional on their instruments..and Adam..oh Adam, that HAIR he had.

I think the thing is that they are at the core friends, they all let Bono have the spotlight, but at the same time, they are all equals, I think that is the real key.

Plus they are incredibly nice guys too..that really does have to help as well.

I know! Their meeting has a fantastic element of DESTINY to it. So do some of their early songs. I mean, I know I've mentioned it before, but these lines in "The Ocean" just kill me:

And I felt like a star
I felt the world could go far
If they listened to what I said.

He was 18 when he wrote that. Well, the world certainly has, Bono!

Have you seen the "Street Missions" video? Oh, boys. *g* And yes, the hair was bad. Though I don't think it's fair to single Adam out. While the blond fro was...something, they all had bad hair at one point or another. Larry spent years looking like a muppet, Bono had horrible long '80s hair, and frankly, losing his hair was one of the best things that ever happened to Edge. ;-)

The friendship...that's what really astounds me. To live and work with the same people, over all that time, and still be close? That's epic, whether you're rock stars or not.

I even find Don't Panic!, which I've had for years (since before it was reissued--check out my cred, yo!), to be a bit weird, 'cause it's not all that well-written. But I'm just...DURAN DURAN? I've read some of Neil's old magazine pieces (there are a few in Angels & Visitations), but a whole book... Have you read it?

Thing is, I have to have read it. I was such a huge Duranee when I was a kid. I had everything! I still have a few things, but not, I think, this particular book. I'll have to look through my stash.

I single Adam out because he's my favorite. *yes, I do have a favorite* which all in all is surprising because I ususally love drummers..anyway, they all had bad hair, it's not a big deal.

I still have many MANY old Rolling Stone magazines with them on it, my love of them goes way back, Oh, damn, I have '45's that they put out (although a lot of them are from "The Joshua Tree")...I was a youngin' then..*sigh*

Anyway, I think it's BECAUSE they are all friends that they have stayed together, it becomes family, they let one fly..knowing he will return home because as much as I love each individual one, I think that each one is not more important than the sum of the whole.

That sounds really interesting, though. I am torn between WANTING TO KNOW EVERYTHING and my usual desire not to know anything about the actors / musicians / performers so I can keep my little illusions *g*.

Neil Gaiman wrote all sorts of weird things back when he was a starving young journo. And I too own Don't Panic, bought lo these many years ago when I first fell in love with H2G2, and long before I'd even heard of Gaiman *g*. It was only much later than I realised the book was by him!

Why do I have no U2 icons? In the top ten events of my life so far, seeing U2 in Celtic Park on the Zooropa tour, in Murrayfield on the Popmart tour and in Manchester on the Vertigo tour all make the cut.

Yes, I was thinking along those lines, too. *embarrassed grin* And while I have liked U2 for, oh, 15 years or so, the overwhelming urge to pre-order that book probably stems from listening to the Puddlejumpers way too much during the past few months.

Re Neil: I guess comparisons of his early and current work just indicate how far practice can actually take you! Not that I think Don't Panic was that badly written.

Wouldn't it be easiest if I just got it when I came up on the 31st? I know that it's cutting it close if there are any problems, but I can't think of any other solution that isn't horribly complicated or expensive.

As soon as I heard my friend mention it I sort of flailed a bit and then had to wander off into mental puddlejumpers territory, so, yes - figured you might like to know and slot it in somewhere eventually. *grin*
