I'm sorry to ask this, but BossMan just decided that 1) we need to run a "Young Hollywood Hot Gadgets" page in the next issue, 2) I am in charge of it, and 3) I need to come up with a list of suggestions by the end of the day. Of course on top of the 84,000 other things I need to do, and while he goes to a screening. Right. So, since y'all are probably the most tech-savvy people I know: can you tell me what the hottest new gadgets are/are going to be in the next few months? Aside from the iPhone and the wii, which I already thought of.

Thanks, guys. *goes back to panicking*

Did you check the websites for the annual electronics/computer fairs (of course right now I forgot the name, I think it's in Germany)? You don't need to be right, after all, just make an educated guess based on what's the latest available gadget that the public isn't that used to yet.

Until my brother the rich, techno-geek gets back to me, I have links of things that at least look kind of interesting:

http://www.i4u.com/

http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2007/biz2/0701/gallery.thirdscreen.cesgadgets/index.html

http://www.canada.com/topics/finance/story.html?id=21dea652-841e-4315-8733-b2df57ecf68b

http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1575333,00.html

There are lots more, but there's enough overlap between these fairly reputable sites that it should give you a lot to start with.

Cnet is also an awesome resource for this.

This is the Consumer electronics show another commenter was referencing. They have a really good site, and you can search by type so you can find a bunch of interesting things.

I recommend browsing ThinkGeek.com (www.thinkgeek.com) for some of the fun gadgets out there (especially under electronics).

And for some specifics...

National Geographic creates a Globe Trotting Phone (http://news.com.com/2061-10801_3-6161202.html)

Traveling Keyboard--for the TNG Fans! (http://www.sharperimage.com/us/en/catalog/product/sku__GU001)

Ooh! Those glasses you hook up to your video iPod - great for watching movies while on the plane, etc. I can't get to my notes to find the company link/name right now. NOT Seepu, those are crap, but that's the general idea.

Kingston makes these really adorable, colorful, lego-like memory sticks.

I'd like to see someone do a "salon tech" sidebar with shower CD players, Zeno, and a decidedly low-tech Tub Topper. I want one of those even more than an iPhone. :)

If you remember the name of those glasses, please tell me—that sounds really cool! And "Salon tech" is a great idea. I wonder if they'd go for that...

Thanks!

Maybe you should have a list of real "hot" gadgets and add one totally made up fictional gadget, to see if anyone is paying attention? Like shoes that play music or something. Except musical shoes probably do exist, and I'm just not hip enough to know about them.

Towleroad (http://towleroad.typepad.com/towleroad/) does a weekly Tech post, which I find always has the most up-to-date gadget news. It may be of some use to you!

I'm sure this is a little too hot to put on that list, but here's the link anyway: OhMiBod (http://lazygeisha.com/2007/02/07/the-ohmibod-vibrator-coming-together/) from Apple.

(There's a very amusing pic, in the style of my icon, about half way down that page. Let's just say I'll never think of thigh holsters the same way again.)

Um, mp3 players are always big. Here ipod and Creative seem to be the big names, and both have ones that have up to 40GB hard drives and play video. Ipod and a crazy number of gadget extras too.

Good luck.

Cool gadget ...

Will so look at getting one of these once Sony make them available in the UK! :-)

I'm a nerd! I know these things!

Damn, iPhone and Wii were the first that sprang to mind!

Well, there are hybrid and solid state hard drives coming out. Hybrid hard drives have flash memory to be used as cache (if you happen to have Windows Vista...which you shouldn't) for faster boot times and better battery life for laptops. Solid state drives are purely flash, like the little USB sticks. Cool, quick load times, no moving parts (again, battery life) but hideously expensive. Like, $600 added to the price of your laptop for a 32 gig solid state drive.

Apple is also working on their tv thing, but it's been delayed till March. Lets you stream media from a computer to your tv. An Xbox 360 can do that too, as can several other systems, but they don't have Steve Job's reality distortion field to aid them.

There's the on-going war between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD for the next optical format, but both are encumbered by fascist (and now cracked) content protection schemes. Sony is betting that the PS3 can drive Blu-Ray adoption, but that would involve selling them in meaningful quantities.

Also, a couple of awesome video games that have been worked on by a certain someone will be coming out this year. And yes, I'm biased ;)

Hm. If you can find a celebrity who's promoting it, there's the One Laptop Per Child Project (http://laptop.org/), which is developing a $100 laptop (http://laptop.media.mit.edu/) to distribute in the Third World. That's... sort of gadgety? I think it's neat, anyway.

Late, but perhaps of interest...

I got a thing for Xmas that's pretty neat. It's the size of a Bic lighter, you dictate into it, then plug it into your USB port and it transcribes your golden words while you do other stuff. (Headset optional.)

These devices have been around for a few years, but they just dropped to under $100.

I can find a link if you're interested.
