Two days ago, I ran into Joss Whedon (almost quite literally) at the Whole Foods in Brentwood. This makes twice that I've seen him and utterly failed to have the courage to say anything.

Yesterday, I met mciac for lunch and shopping, and with some borrowed courage, applied for a job at Barnes & Noble. I really, really want this job. Light a candle, say a prayer, do a voodoo ritual for me...

Capped off the day by going to see Howl's Moving Castle at the El Capitan. (Yes, I know: "el" means "the." But that's the name of the theater! Saying otherwise would be weird.) It was terrific. I think I liked Spirited Away more, perhaps because the mythos was more exotic to me, but Miyazaki + Diana Wynne Jones? Fab combination.

And why has it been so long since I've read any Diana Wynne Jones? Not to mention: E. Nesbit or Edward Eager. I miss my childhood!

Though not so much that the dream I had last night in which I had to move back into my childhood home didn't totally freak me out...

If I ran into him, I'd probably just ask about how various members of his family are doing, in lieu of having the courage to tell him how much I love his shows. Anyway, you remind me of this drabble that I wrote ages ago.

But the movie didn't make any sense! At least not without having read the book, say various friends of mine, and having read the book, I think Miyazaki made some very strange choices.

Thanks for linking to that drabble. How fitting! And it made me laugh all over again.

I read Howl's Moving Castle literally more than a decade ago, so I wasn't doing the best book-to-movie comparison. But I thought the movie made sense on its own. It was a fantasy; I didn't mind not having everything explained.

Though I understand your bitterness, re: Howl's Moving Castle. I was still living in Vermont when Princess Mononoke came out, and it never came to the entire state. NEVER. I'm still angry.

I saw the movie twice (once in Japanese and once in English). I have to say I like it better in English, mostly because it made a helluva lot more sense. Granted, during my first viewing (in Jap), I was comparing book and movie WAY too much, so it was hard to judge the movie's inner coherency. But yeah, having the scarecrow at the end say, "I'm a prince from a neighboring country" when there's been no clear prior mention of him . . . . . ?!?!?! o_O

Bleah... I'm babbling. Anyways, glad you liked it! And yeah, I rather liked Spirited Away better, though in terms of enjoyment this one might take the cake. ^__^

Hope the job thing works out. Mmmmm... bookstore employment...

Actually, the missing prince was mentioned earlier, but very briefly. It'd be totally easy to miss.

Thanks for the bookstore wishes. I still haven't heard anything, which is tortuous. Call me, Barnes & Noble, you beyotches! (I was careful not to call them beyotches on the application.)

Yeah, it's funny, I had no trouble joking around with Nathan Fillion or Adam Baldwin, etc. but I come to Joss, and I'm fucking speechless. So sad.
