mcshep_match—and a better, more exciting story to go out on I couldn't have chosen. This tale has a cinematic quality and scope that makes me want to see it forty feet high from stadium seating. The author achieves the remarkable feat of completely rewriting the latter half of season 3 while at the same time sticking diligently to canon; the events stay pretty much the same, but if you read this story, you'll never be able to watch those episodes and think about them in the same way again. She writes a John POV that captivating, heart-breaking, and utterly believable, and remarkably, she managed to capture everyone else perfectly, too. This is a very angsty story, but there's tons of humor—great banter and some truly funny lines. There's also a Kate Heightmeyer who actually seems competent. That may be the most remarkable feat of all!
Okay, not really. Really, this is a story about John undergoing, and then recovering from, a life-shattering experience, and it never backs down, never takes the easy way out. I can't praise this story highly enough, and yet I'm wary about discussing it in too great detail, because I don't want to spoil it—it really needs to be experienced. Seriously: go start reading, and if at a certain point you don't feel like your world has been rocked, I will be truly surprised. Because this is one of the few genuinely surprising tales I have read in quite some time. It's long and meaty, and you all really need to set aside a few hours (you won't want to stop once you get going) and see what I mean. It's appropriate that the prompt for this fic was "Prisoner of War," because this story will captivate you. And you'll be glad.
Go experience Stockholm Syndrome with Invisible Prisoner
