Okay, crazy, crazy idea that may amount to nothing. But I just got back from dropping my brother at the airport, where he's flying to Paris for five months, and when I told my dad that I'm just dying for a vacation, he said, "Well, you're unemployed right now—now's the time to get away. You deserve it." Parental permission! So while it's still largely impractical and I'm not sure I can afford it, I thought I'd stretch out some feelers and ask:

If I were to go to London for a week(ish) in early October, would any of you be available to hang out? And/or—would any of you be willing to put me up for a couple days?

[livejournal.com profile] siriaeve and [livejournal.com profile] wychwood can vouch for the fact that I am not crazy. Or a secretly a man. (Or secretly a crazy man.)

This idea, on the other hand...yeah, it's nuts. But so's this year. I want to do something spontaneous and fun!

A fan/not a fan?

I spent three days in London in 2005 and really loved it. But I may be an easily bewitched American. ;-)

I just don't really understand why anyone would ever want to come to England! Rubbishly little country that it is. I used to hate London until I started living there, and now I don't mind it so much.

Haha, seriously? I think England is so awesome! I have anglophilia like whoa.

I'd say that I don't know why anyone would want to come to America, but there are actually many places in America that are awesome, including my own city. I just get sick of being here all the damn time.

I actually think England is rubbish. I don't mean to offend you, but I often feel patronised by Americans just for being English. It is not "so cute". Our accents are not "awesome".

Well, the "quaint" shit would piss me off. But I like England—and other bits of Europe, too—because things like the architecture and aspects of the culture are different from at home. YOU HAVE BUILDINGS THAT ARE ACTUALLY OLD. And not like in America (especially on the West Coast, where I live) where people are like, "It was built in 1928! IT'S SO OLD AND HISTORIC!"

And yeah, okay, I do like English accents. I like a lot of "foreign" accents—because they are different! Because they aren't what I ordinarily encounter. I only wish people would be enchanted by the dulcet tones of my California accent. (Judging from my year in Ireland...it's not that exciting. Rats.)

Sorry if my excitement annoys. It's not meant to be patronizing at all. I just like exploring new and unfamiliar places—where the ordinary, to me, becomes extraordinary.

Yeah. California accents. Hmm...

Love you, though.

Now Boston accents, those are cool. Not that I'm biased or anything.

Just kidding. Southern Cali accents are funky.

Trin, how long has it been since you graduated university? Less than a year, or more?

If it's less than a year (and since you're currently unemployed), you can get a student work exchange visa to... well, to Ireland, if you want to. And you can go over there and work for up to 9 months.

It's been more than a year, alas. I graduated in May 2006.

However, if I do end up going to London, I may drop off my resume at SFX. JUST IN CASE. They need me, they just don't know it yet!

Still, a week in London. London is one of my favorite world cities.

And actually... You could catch David Tennant in Love's Labour's Lost at the RSC during October.

Just - the hostels, if you can stand them. If not, then try to get a hotel that has cooking facilities, so you can save on food. Or you can stay in a student residence hall/hostel, for relatively short cash. And the halls have kitchens in the buildings, which helps.

You do, in fact, totally deserve a vacation.

I would note that I'll be in LA over the weekend of October 11 because it's my 10-year high school reunion. So you not being in London then would be awesome, because I could see you. (But I'll also be down one month later for a couple days longer than that.)

Oddly enough, I might be there, depending on how things work out. I'm planning a similar unemployment European vacation, and London is a spot I have a couch, although given my being a couch surfer, I don't think I'd be able to land you a spot. But my plans are all up in the air right now, so I don't know exactly when I'll be there. I'll keep you posted.

You barely know me as I mostly lurk, but I live in a historic little town about 45 mins out of london, on a direct train route or drive. As it stands right now I'm in the UK and about for October. I'd be willing to put you up for a few days if you needed. I'm only and hours away from both airports so could pick you up/drop you back if need be.

Spontaneous trips are the best! If you want more info on where I am so you can check it out and see if you'd want to be based here for a few then email me on alix@63br.freeserve.co.uk

Hah. I'm going to be in London Sept. 23-Oct. 10, for approx. similar reasons (substitute "unemployed" with "writing freelance fulltime and can do so anywhere with an Internet"). Won't be able to house, sorry. But could be fun to meet up. :)

Me. ME. I WANT TO HANG OUT. In London if that's where you are, but I am NOT PICKY :) I do have a bunch of choir and other things on that month, though, so I don't know how much time I'll be able to manage (EEP TRIN IN THE UK). I can totally put you up, but only if you come up to Birmingham, sadly :)

PS DEAR TRIN'S FLIST: TRIN IS NOT CRAZY OR SECRETLY A MAN (UNLESS IT'S A VERY GOOD DISGUISE)

I live in Oxford, and commute to London on weekdays (Sorry this is so long after your post, but I've been in Naples with no email for the last fortnight). I can meet up with you in either, or show you around Oxford (probably in the evening). Have a parent staying that week, but even with that I still have space for you to stay a night if you want to. Connections to Birmingham and London are very good.

Let me know if you decide to come! And it would be excellent to see you at some point. And show you around Oxford, which you should not on any account miss.
