Why are people so stupid? Okay, dumb question I know, but jeeze. I was in my Victorianism class the other day and we were supposed to be discussing The Sign of the Four. I said something about how Doyle was obsessed with the exotic and mentioned the whole Mormon thing in A Study in Scarlet. And the entire class went: Whaaaaa? Okay, so none of them had read that. Later I mentioned something from "The Speckled Band." Whaaaaa? "A Scandal in Bohemia." Whaaaaa? The Hound of the Baskervilles. Yup: Whaaaaaaaaaa? So I finally asked, "Has anyone read any other Sherlock Holmes stories?" One girl was like, "Well, some--when I was like, nine." Everyone else: nada. Including--yes--the tutor! Just...I don't know what to do with that. You're in university, halfway to an English degree how?

Seriously. I am not that smart. I should not be able to talk circles around these people because none of them are willing to pick up a frickin' book!

Things that make me feel better: Dorky pictures of U2 in the early '80s. So when they were, you know, my age. Awww.

I'm so jealous of everyone in America who is going to have a real, honest-to-god Thanksgiving this week. Our fake one was this past Saturday, and well, they tried. It was very cute. It was put on by our foreign exchange liaison, who is English, and we were all sitting around at this pub called The Barge, eating our first course, which was corn chowder. And she's like, "So how is the soup? Is it authentic?" And Katrina and I just look at each other: "Sure! It's lovely soup!" ...which we would never have for Thanksgiving, EVER. The whole meal was like that: roast potatoes instead of mashed, sliced turkey and ham. Very bad pumpkin pie. When I think about what my mom's going to be cooking this Thursday, I could cry.

Things that make me feel better and will also help you understand the underlying theme of this post: Jon Stewart's stand-up. Listen to this track...actually, you know what, have the whole thing:

(Bits of) Jon Stewart's Unleavened special:

1996 Olympics
War 'n' Stuff
MTV and Sex (also linked above)
New York and Staying Healthy
Beer and Condoms
Judaism vs. Christianity

ETA: War 'n' Stuff link fixed.

That's all I've got, anyway. If anybody has any more--or any mp3s of Stewart's stand-up, well... *bats eyelashes at you*

*

My brain's totally scattered, as I'm sure none of you can tell. ;-) But one last thing: I've got a new fic up at [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic: Something Wicked. McKay/Sheppard (duh) and Weir/Zelenka (huh); pretty long; very weird. Definitely what comes of reading Bradbury before bed.

Now: soup, second sweater, prepare presentation on Pilgrim's Progress. Ahh, alliteration. *eg*

You know, I went to a Thanksgiving dinner when I was in Belgium. It was hosted by Mimi, who was from Florida, and her host family, and she reluctantly invited we non-american foreigners at the last minute. She cooked a turkey herself, for the first time, and I think it was okay, but her host mother put celery in the mashed potato "to make it more interesting", and the apple pie was from a french company and thus not right, and, and....

At the time I had no idea what it was all about and why they were all so miserable about it - after all, even Christmas away didn't bother me much, mostly (I suspect) because it was too damn cold. :) Of course, I understand better now why you all get so upset about missing it, but I will never, ever be able to eat candied yams or even pumpkin pie...

*hugs*
If it helps even remotely, things will only be different this year, and next year you will be at home telling witty anecdotes about what those foolish Brits gave you for Thanksgiving dinner. :)

Also, good roast potatoes rock my world. I am jealous. :)

Yams... *whimper*

Thanks for the encouraging words. Intellectually, I know, I know...but emotionally and, uh, gastronomically? I want my American Thanksgiving and a thick ol' slice of mom's apple pie!

Speaking of moms, I should get mine to make you her Thanksgiving yams and apples and her pumpkin pie. She can convert anyone, my mum...

Oh man, thank you for those clips! My husband and I quote parts of that '96 Olympics bit at each other all the time. Especially "You can do it! I can not do it, but you can do it!" and "The Russians stick their landings!"

You think that's bad? The other day, I forgot what you colonials call a hob. Apparently the word is "burner." Hmm. *contemptuous sniff*

Looks like the War 'n' Stuff link is the same as the MTV and Sex. Thanks for the uploads--I'm cracking up over the latter!

Argh! Sorry about that--copy and paste mix-up; I fixed it now. (War 'n' Stuff is now actually...War 'n' Stuff.) Thanks for telling me; I'm glad you're laughing. *g*

I would at least have known what you were talking about though...

And I bet you wouldn't have tried to pretend that the scads of other SH stories were irrelevant to the interpretation of TSotF, like the tutor did. Grrr. *is cranky fake academic*

Consuming copious amounts of alcohol sounds good. So does trapping Jon Stewart in a box. Maybe we could get him drunk, and then lure him in with something shiny... *plots*

Not that I mind more of the old one... *poke, gentle one*

I'm working on it! I just have to finish this [livejournal.com profile] undermistletoe story first. And write two English papers. Notice what the order of those sentences says about my priorities.

My offer for you to visit me still stands

Good, because I absolutely plan to inflict myself on you before this trip is over. It probably won't be till the spring, though. We should plot...

No, seriously: I obviously need a bit of pressure; I can't concentrate on anything I'm supposed to be working on. And that includes fic things.

I'll try to find out my dates for spring vac. And then I get to beg my parents for extra money...
