I managed to sneak another story into
sga_flashfic's Amnesty: Playing Tag, McKay/Sheppard, dog tag porn for
megolas. For the 38 Minutes Challenge, which, dude, was really HARD. When I'm not tearing my hair out or weeping into my hands, I sometimes get kind of cocky about writing--"I can do ANYTHING!"--and while I was nervous about this challenge, it shocked me by being even harder than I thought. The worst was not having enough time to tinker--I'm poor at actual revision, but I hadn't realized how important the ability to make little changes was to me. So that was interesting.
Also interesting: the results to the, erm, topping poll. Not so much the trend toward giving Rodney the honors--I had noticed that in my reading, and I am absolutely NOT complaining--but the fact that so many of you expressed a preference for physicist over flyboy. (No offense to John meant--you are my emergency backup boyfriend always, and I love you, but it's tough to beat out that mind and that mouth and those eyes and those arms and...I'm getting off-topic.) Um, not that the poll was in any way scientific, and I suspect that if I put up the exact same questions on a different day, the results would vary considerably. But, uh. I guess I just thought more of the fandom in general was Shep-inclined. Maybe that's it: in general. I've got mostly slashers on my flist; how do you think the results to the second question would differ if it was asked to het 'shippers? Or am I making lame-o assumptions here?
And now I'm going to do something I'll probably regret and talk about
sga_rps. Now, I should probably start by saying that I have never read RPS. That never is just a little too broad, though: I've started reading RPS several times (it's not like I have a moral objection or anything; not even close) but it's always made me a bit too uncomfortable and I've had to stop. Mostly, I think it's because I'm confused in my own head about who I'm reading about: actors aren't characters; there's no canon! Nothing (concrete) to base it on! It...it flusters me, okay? It just makes me feel...weird.
That said, I have a feeling that if I could get past whatever weirdness I'm experiencing, I would really like it. Mostly because I like anything that seems taboo--hi! PRIESTSEX!--and there are all sorts of reasons why relationships between two actors--especially two male actors--on a show or movie could become complicated and angst-ridden--IOW, fun. And yet: I persist in feeling squicked.
The reason I bring this up is because today I realized what I think I really want: an original novel about two male actors on a popular TV show who fall in love and struggle with it and fame and a myriad of other complications, have lots of prettily-described sex, and eventually end up together, after possibly making out during a live taping or something. And then I want that original novel to be made into a movie starring David Hewlett and Joe Flanigan. *g*
Till that happens, I will be watching the behind-the-scenes TV Guide clip that
slashygood posted over and over, and y'all can start a betting pool as to whether I cave and join
sga_rps this week or next month or never. Or now.

Yes, but unfortunately, that pretty much stops me from caring. ;-) With SGA, I care just enough that it's making me nervous...
I think I'm waiting for there to be even one good story that people are reccing. I suspect that'd be enough to push me over the edge. *she says, teetering*

Date: 2006-01-15 06:14 pm (UTC)As for the flyboy love - I associate a little too well with Rodney McKay, what with the abrasiveness and the overwhelming arrogance and the love of sarcasm and the intellectual snobbery, so I can completely understand the attraction to John Sheppard. But while I adore Rodney, I'm not so much attracted to him - though the mind and the mouth are hot!
As for RPS - it has that forbidden hotness that can be hot. But where I can totally see it with some movies and TV shows, I really can't at all with SGA. But I'm sure I could be convinced. I'm kind of easy that way.

Date: 2006-01-15 06:15 pm (UTC)And, heh. I think we have kind of ... different reasons for RPF here! See, like ... well, hm, no. Actors I have a harder time getting into, like — well, the LOTR guys, right? That was like, an insane media blitz. Interviews everywhere, people talking about the premiers for months; I have an mp3 of Billy Boyd singing "Hit me baby one more time" on The Osbournes. Media blitz. So that? I can get behind. There's a bunch of kids running around being silly, and I get to see it.
There's the same sort of thing, as
But Joe Flanigan and David Hewlett? I mean, maybe it'd be different if I had the DVDs and listened to commentary, or subscribed to the right magazines or something, but ... I have no idea who these guys are. Nothin' at all. Like, someone hands me Viggo/Orlando? That bears no resemblance to Aragorn/Legolas. But ... I dunno. I feel like Joe/David to me would be McShep with different names ... or, if they are in fact nothing like that, original fic with real people's names stuck on.

Date: 2006-01-15 06:25 pm (UTC)RPS has never appealed to me really - probably because while I see R/J as omg-their-love-is-so-hot-and-impure-and-snarky, slashing DH and JF just makes me want to grab DH and go "No! Mine!" Unless I can watch and then have them both...

I knew Justin Timberlake's favorite color was baby blue long before I ever voluntarily listened to their music.
Did he, um, describe it that way himself? 'Cause I'm seeing your (a) point: that's pretty darn gay.
I feel like Joe/David to me would be McShep with different names ... or, if they are in fact nothing like that, original fic with real people's names stuck on.
Well, yeah. That's what weirds me out, I think. But I'm in love with the story of "Oh fuck, we are so attracted to each other and we have to work together EVERY DAY and no one can know, OMG ANGST" and on the set of a TV show or movie is just one of MANY places I would like to see it play out. Add to that two people I already find IMMENSELY attractive and, well: temptation. Temptation tempered by bouts of being extremely weirded out, but temptation nonetheless. ;-)

I think that's what I'm feeling. I'm already curious; therefore, it is probably only a matter of time.
And BTW, huge love to your icon!

Date: 2006-01-15 06:31 pm (UTC)*dies* Well my point was more "there are pre-printed guides of their favorite whatevers for our convenience available at Walgreens," but ... that too!
And oh, yes, I understand it. Which is, heh, part of the appeal of the baseball slash, actually: except it's more "Oh fuck, we're so attracted to each other, and we have to work together EVERY DAY, and no one can know, and if anyone does find out we will be completely ostracized and lose our absurdly high-paying jobs and our international fame and our families and the love and trust of everyone we know, and then we'll DIE AND GO TO HELL."... XD;; so I feel you there.
Although your dudes are generally hotter.

Date: 2006-01-15 06:39 pm (UTC)On the other hand, there is one actor (not in SGA) who does appeal to me on an RPF level - the problem is that none of the actors he's typically paired with interest me like that.

I think probably that the het side of things is more John-focussed - the biggest ships are John/Elizabeth and John/Teyla, from what I've seen. But there are certainly some big John fans even on the slash side -
RPF... makes me deeply uncomfortable. Because while I agree that exploring the idea of relationships between actors could be really interesting, ultimately, I'm never happy with speculating over the private lives of Real Live Persons. It just squicks me.
The original novel sounds really cool, though *g* I would totally be up for that! Plus there's lots of interesting stuff about whether the actors are falling in love with the people or the characters... did you ever watch Deep Space Nine? Because two of the actors there got married. And another two on Babylon 5. Both marriages broke up within a few years, and I'm pretty sure one of the reasons cited was that confusion.
(also? Based on the behind-the-scenes stuff I've seen, it doesn't actually look like JF hangs out with the others as much anyway. DH seems to spend more time with Paul McGillion and some of the others...)

Oh, damn you. Stop making it sound so appealing!<--And frighteningly, that is not actually sarcasm.

Baseball players used to be hot. Damn steroids, they ruin everything!

Date: 2006-01-15 06:43 pm (UTC)Anyway, I joined that comm the moment I saw it, mostly because I was really curious what people would do with Joe's wife and kids. (Somehow, I had assumed that it would mostly be Joe/David, and I was right. *g*) Overall, there isn't much there, but it's not really bad. They don't seem like their characters, but I could see it being them, too. (And I like Torri even more now, for some reason. LOL!) I don't have the comm friended, so I can just go read when I feel like it. That helps. I was pleased to see a story from a trusted and beloved popslash writer. Which was pretty good. *g* Many of the good sga slash writers came from popslash.
Also, in terms of Joe's wife and kids - they don't pop up. His wife mainly is okay with it all, and kids are never mentioned. Gotta love it. LOL

Date: 2006-01-15 06:49 pm (UTC)I'm kind of worried about how much I will like it and my brain is scrambled enough as it is without adding to the melodrama.
Personally, I feel that RPS toes an invisible line. Maybe not crosses it alltogether, but definately flirts with it a bit.
Now talking about rock groups, that doesn't bother me as much because the writers are just messing with the percieved persona, what the machine wants the public to know. This doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the real person.
I dunno. I think that the reason RPS kind of squicks me is the possible implications and problems it can cause at cons.
As it is, I already cringe at people asking *way* to personal questions of actors regarding character slash at cons. I think I'd just about crawl into a hole if someone went up there and said, "Oh yeah, I get off reading about DH and PM getting it on" or something like that.
Because, let's face it, we've all been to cons where people lacked TACT and if slash comes up (no pun intended) then one day RPS will come up.
(That being said, I once wrote a Mary-Sue ish story about the band Cinderella. Ever heard of them?)
So I guess I just don't know what I think so God only knows why I'm babbling about this....

Date: 2006-01-15 06:50 pm (UTC)a)the lack of knowledge. I mean - like
DH and JF? Sure, there's bits - I've watched like, three behind the scene things, listened to one commentary and from the latter I know that Joe's "scared of the internet" (siege podcast) - but it's nothing as comprehensive because both seem to value their privacy etc and aren't been packaged as a selling point. I read the fic and..I can't see it as being them because I don't have the "canon" behind me, if you will. (not that I believe that what I read in lotrips and popslash was actually them but I could at least see the "canon" inspiration behind it.)
and b) is that I come from the fannish era where rps was frowned upon. A lot. I changed to this name because of that about five years ago and in a way, I still feel a bit...'keep it secret, keep it safe' about it, so when the people involved are netsavvy? I get a bit flaily. Elijah Wood? Boy knows how to work on the internet. DH? Runs/ran a web design company and is, from what I've read, the biggest geek this side of wil wheaton - I would bet money that he's already seen McShep porn without it being brought to his attention and wow, do I flail like a flaily thing at that thought. The idea of him finding rps just sends me into a tizzy. :g:
But, yeah - that's just my personal reasons. I'm certainly in favour of other people writing it and all but I don't ever see myself doing more than dipping my toes in the edge.
Man, I was going to say something about my experience with the 38 minute challenge but I've already babbled on long enough... Heh!
