The day someone figures out how to YSI chocolate will be a very happy day indeed.

Date: 2006-01-18 11:29 am (UTC)...yeah. These days, in fandom that's practically lost the sexual overtones, but I doubt that's obvious to mundanes *g*

Have you ever read Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age? They can kind of do that.

Date: 2006-01-18 11:45 am (UTC)Yeah. The tutor just looked at me, and then she said, "Um. Does that mean quite the same thing in your country?"--meaning America. And I said, "No, in my country it's subtly different"--meaning fandom.
Or maybe we just blinked at each other for a few seconds and then ignored the entire incident.
I fail at Neal Stephenson reading. I fail at cyberpunk in general--it's like, "Whoa, two pages in and I'm already intensely confused!" *shame*

Date: 2006-01-18 12:06 pm (UTC)I don't have so much of a problem with the inner monologue, what I do is accidentally out myself as a TOTAL GEEK by being unable to not answer random questions and statements of ignorance. Like Monday, when the tutor was talking about the Mars rovers, and mentioned Spirit but couldn't remember the other name, and my mouth opened and "Opportunity!" came out, and everyone looked at me funny, and I was all, hey, did I just say that? And then they asked me what I'd said, and I had to explain, and I'm sort of mumbling and want to hide RIGHT NOW, and... yeah. I do that a lot.
Awww. I like Neal Stephenson, but yes, he isn't exactly the easiest writer to follow... What have you tried, if anything? Because some of his stuff is easier than others.

Ah, yes. I do this too. It's Hermione syndrome, and there IS NO CURE!

Hee. And OMG, have you seen this (http://www.livejournal.com/users/colbert_feed/23043.html)?

I tried Diamond Age, actually. But this is why I'm a bad sci-fi reader: if right from the start there are a bunch of terms I don't understand, and I have to put lots and lots of effort into figuring out the world, I get frustrated and give up. I'm like, "Bitch, this is supposed to be my FUN reading! If I wanted to be this fucking confused, I'd go back to reading Dryden."
Actually, Dryden's not that confusing--more like "boring" and "mean to Milton." *cuddles Milton, which he would surely not have appreciated*

Date: 2006-01-18 12:31 pm (UTC)Absolutely! I stalk your journal for the comments threads, because they're so hilarious. This one is especially good, though *g* It's like - your entire flist is made up of mad funny geeks! It's the coolest place in town!
It's Hermione syndrome, and there IS NO CURE!
...but having a diagnosis is half the battle? Hermione syndrome, I must remember that *g*
OMG, have you seen this?
Not yet! But I will, when I get home to my computer that has my software on it! I've heard good things about that show.

Ah, fair enough. And yes, Neal Stephenson does that even more than most - throwing you into the world so you work it out as you go along. I really enjoy his stuff, though. *sads*
"If I wanted to be this fucking confused, I'd go back to reading Dryden."
Yeah, but you read James Joyce, so you have no room to talk about people writing confusingly *g*
I don't think I ever read any Dryden. Nor much Milton, though I have a copy of Paradise Lost somewhere. I should probably remedy that.

I've heard good things about that show.
That particular snippet is especially priceless. And...relevant. *g*

I will try again. Seriously, he is on my "Try again, you lazy bitch!" list.
...I should have been a motivational speaker.

Did I ever claim to have understood Ulysses? No, I did not. Because I...did not. ;-)
Dubliners, though...damn. *loves*
Milton is great. Paradise Lost in particular, but I also really like his sonnets. This is my favorite (http://rpo.library.utoronto.ca/poem/1451.html).

Yay! Try Snow Crash if you can, that was more of a general success, so is probably more accessible. Or else Zodiac, which isn't cyberpunk at all, but much more normal-story-like than his usual.

That's really nice. Also, ROCK ON MILTON YOU ARE SO RIGHT. Being immature and almost 24 is ok! Milton said so! Yay!

Date: 2006-01-22 06:12 pm (UTC)I just did! (I couldn't watch it at university, and the embedded player didn't work for me in Linux, so it's taken a while...)
And ahahaha :) BREEDING!
Is it wrong that I kind of want yet another version of the badger animation, only with little Mars rovers popping up? *g*

Date: 2006-01-18 02:17 pm (UTC)Word, man. I find myself haunting them more often than is healthy (and right now, trying not to laugh in the middle of world's most boring lab session. The wank comment! Ahahahaha!)
