Today I:

1. Went to my 9 a.m. tutorial on Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and almost strangled a guy who first went off on a LENGTHY tangent about some nonsensical "post-colonial" reading of the text ("See, the narrative doesn't exist until Alice arrives--she imposes it on the citizens of Wonderland!" Right. That imperialist, seven-year-old bitch) and then told me it was "utterly pointless" for me to suggest that possibly, this was not what Carroll had intended. Sometimes I really hate English majors.

2. Wrote a draft of my history paper. It makes no sense and it's four words short (after dinner: add adjectives!) but do I care? No. My inner Hermione is rather peeved at me, but honestly, I could not give a shit. *loves the delightful doneness of being done*

I'm utterly exhausted now--I feel like a deflated balloon--but in the interest of being mildly celebratory, here is some music for y'all:

I promised [livejournal.com profile] smittywing more Mirah.

Sweepstakes Prize (That's the one I already gave you, right?)
Cold, Cold Water ([livejournal.com profile] lcsbanana, this song totally reminds me of that Stephen Crane poem you gave me for a prompt. Must write that fic!)
Special Death (This one's totally my Teyla song.)
Advisory Committee
Dreamboat
Don't Die in Me
100 Knives
Engine Heart (And these last three are all major McKay/Sheppard songs to me.)

[livejournal.com profile] custardpringle said, "Milla Jovovich does music?" Yes, she does! Here are three of my favorites.

It's Your Life | 2nd link
Don't Fade Away
Satellite of Love

(She wrote the first two herself; the third is, obviously, a Velvet Underground cover.)

Finally, here is something cool I got off [livejournal.com profile] audiography today. I think it's an interesting Atlantis or John-and-Atlantis song.

Big Science - Laurie Anderson

Enjoy! And, um, write more porn! I'm going to go pass out now...

Wait, except first: GIP! Extremely enthusiastic GIP! [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve is the best friend ever, and you should all shower her with porn and chocolate. *nods*

Possibly you could have explained to English Major that looking for subvertive colonialist messages in a nonsense fairytale (that was written almost completely off the top of Lewis Carrol's head, BTW, after a career in mathematics finally snapped his brain) in an attempt to sound intelligent and political instead made him sound like a reactionary wanker?

Or would he just have stared at you blankly and then called you a brainwashed fascist? Because I've met people like that.

Amusingly, this is the same tutorial where I (not so) famously called lit theory "a giant wank session." So yes, that is exactly what I was thinking.

Unfortunately, I am not actually Rodney, and so did not have the balls to say it out loud.

Well, clearly the world of Alice in Wonderland is a dystopic colonial nightmare! The Queen of Hearts orders executions for no reason other than her own irritation and/or enjoyment because she is a symbol of a despotic and capitalistic colonial government! Or something. I've spent too long in college.

Hurrah for the finished history essay. I'm sure it's very good, really; and I sincerely doubt you have to worry about those last four words. They're really not going to count them.

And you are too flattering to me! Though I would not object to either the porn or the chocolate.

Yeah, Carroll was secretly slamming Queen Victoria with the QoH. Of course.

I've spent too long in college.

Nah. You're still aware that crap that you just make up is...crap that you just make up. As long as you can still smell the B.S., you're fine.

Hurrah for the finished history essay. I'm sure it's very good, really

Ugh, it's really not. Do you think maybe you could look it over for me tomorrow, once I've made it slightly less sucky? Just to make sure there isn't anything that's blatantly or offensively wrong?

Though I would not object to either the porn or the chocolate.

I can do that! I can do both of those! Chocolate for you tomorrow, and made-to-order porn whenever you like!

Yup. I'm in the Ussher, where I'm doing some work.

By work, I mean that I have a Word file open, but really I'm just staring out at the cricket pitch and the trees and the rain. It's quite soothing. And full of wonderful procrastination.

I need to grab some food, though. All I've had today is tea and water, and my stomach is starting to rebel. Say if I meet you in the Arts Block in fifteen minutes or so, and we raid M & S for food?

You are so retro! The author is DEAD! Has been for half a century. Text does not BELONG to anybody. Authorial intent is a) negotiable and b) unimportant or c) accidential - he was informed by imperial thought, which was reflected in the text. You pleb!

Anyway. Dues, great idea. Gimme money.

Hm, no, I was being very obscure, and I really want to spare you the boring details. And the unattractive whining.

But lying in bed just now I thought that the proper answer to your fellow student's argument would be that in the text, the mad hatter and the red queen and all the other characters obviously had a life before Alice came, so even if you take into consideration the very human idea/fear that things exist only in conjunction to us (tree in woods nobody hears) the text clearly shows them to be independent from the intruder, who is mostly clueless. (So I got up and wrote it down).

And that little paragraph should give you a clue that academia has me in it's claws and sadly is not satisfied with such meagre offerings as I'm depositing in LJ.

Ignore the jokes about you paying your fee to join my club as well. It's collected quarterly.

Hee, I love those wacky 'readings' of texts. They make me feel like fanfic writers do when they have clearly been watching some completely different show to me in which the characters all have the same names but are otherwise nothing like the ones in the show I watch. My favourite so far was a reading of Great Expectations in which, it was argued, every time Dickens mentioned hands, that meant Pip was shagging someone. He got about a fair bit, apparently, according to this reading.

I am trying to get to the 'hooray, at least it;s done even if it's shite' stage with an essay myself just now, so a) feel my seething jealousy and b) yeah, I should really get off lj, shouldn;t I and write the damn thing?

The author is dead! Long live the author!

Heh. Do you think in 100 years, people'll be reading our fanfic and applying bizarre interpretations to it? "Clearly, all this gay porn is really a metaphor!"

The author is dead! Long live the author!

I really ought to graffiti that all over the English Department; it is their unofficial motto, after all.

Good luck with your essay!

Today is apparently the day of music posts.

1. Dude sounds like a first-class wanker. I'd suggest to him that it might be "utterly pointless" to try to remove his head from his ass.

2. Yay for being done! Who cares if your inner Hermione is not pleased? Mine hasn't been pleased withe me for a very, very long time. But my inner slacker kicked her ass and hogtied her in a back room of my brain, so she's not really complaining anymore.

Oh! I finished Domesday Book and thank you SO MUCH for the rec. It's totally perfect with my other Black-Death-related things I'm studying.

I wish I could write porn. I'm currently stuck at the edge of the forest trying to figure out how to get John and Rodney into the forest and having sex up against a tree.

However, I officially approve of "Write More Porn" as a life goal.

Hi! You don't know me (obviously), but yea, I was directed to your journal a long while ago (at least 2 months) for a really good story and yea, I just stuck around and read everything else here.

Wow, I babble a lot.

Anyway, I was wondering, cuz you're so freaking cool (a hell of lot cooler than anyone I've ever actually met, and that's saying something), do you think you'd mind uploading the Milla Jovovich songs again? Cuz yea, I'm a big fan of her movies (no, really I am) and my brother informed me she's also a musician, but I've never been able to find any of her stuff.

Wow, I babble a hell of a lot more than I thought I did. Especially when I'm nervous. o.o

*leaves you alone now* Sorry to like, disturb you or scare you or something like that.

....

I forgot to mention: I love your stories. My current favorite is a three-way tie (!!) between And Truth, Beauty, Four Quarters (I'm a sucker for AU), and The Sea It Swells (did anything else ever come of that story?), with DADT, Damyata, Dayadhvam and Idol coming in close second. (Yes, I have no life. That's been established by like, everybody. The highlight of my day is if I get a piece of mail. ANY KIND OF MAIL.)

*seriously goes away now*

Satellite of Love (http://www.sendspace.com/file/2snmcv)

Also, I'll let you in on a little secret about "The Sea It Swells"--it is "Four Quarters." It's the alternate (true?) way John convinced Rodney to stick with the band. *eg*
