All You Need Is Love (Songs)
Mar. 6th, 2006 01:16 pmHere is something very cool:
nenar has asked me to make a couple of mixes for her wedding in September! I love making mixes, and I'm honored to be asked to do one for such an important occasion. However, I started playing around with it last night, and I'm beginning to worry that I don't have the world's most wedding-appropriate music collection.
For example, some things I have discovered:
1. Just because I happen to think that Half-Gifts is the most romantic song ever does not mean that it, nor any song that contains the lyric, "This relationship cannot sustain itself," is appropriate for a wedding.
2. Neither is Beast of Burden, you weirdo.
3. The Cher version of Walking in Memphis is probably NOT sexy and romantic to anyone who wasn't a huge fan of The X-Files, and a big Mulder/Scully 'shipper to boot.
4. Has The Flamingos' I Only Have Eyes For You ever been anything other than creepy? Is it bad that I still want to use it?
5. At Last is not about dead people. This makes it more appropriate for use, not less.
6. I can totally get away with including Temptation, but yes, I will be the only one giggling to myself and picturing Joe's dork!dance.
And the big one:
7. MY MUSIC MAY BE GOOD, BUT YOU CAN'T DANCE TO IT.
So I need your help with that. What are some good wedding songs--that you can dance to? If you can YSI or sendspace or megaupload them, that would be great, but if not, even just names would be helpful. I want this mix to be good. ('Cause poor
nenar--if she's reading this, she's probably really nervous now.)
Tangentially: if anyone has Kate Bush's Aerial that they want to upload for me, that'd be totally awesome. In exchange I have...well, a lot of music totally inappropriate for weddings. *guilty grin*
ETA: DAMN YOU,
spazatron! Now I can't stop listening to Wuthering Heights! I want to put it on
nenar's mix! The whole wedding party can do THE DANCE.
This is in no way related to the above.

Date: 2006-03-06 01:43 pm (UTC)"Legal Man" by Belle & Sebastian might work. Very peppy.
Maybe for a slow dance "Lucky Day"? I like the Erin McKeown version.

Date: 2006-03-06 01:51 pm (UTC)If any of that is remotely useful, I can send it to you. Also, it turns out that my favourite band in the world, The Barenaked Ladies, use their poppy alt-rock sound to mask the fact that all of their clever, clever lyrics are horrendously cynical and depressing. All their albums, and not one single wedding-appropriate song! Canada, why do you fail me?

Date: 2006-03-06 02:18 pm (UTC)(take Call and Answer, for example: I only think about you when we're both in the same room. I'm only here to witness the remains of loving you. You think we're here to play a game of who loves more than who. 0_o).
The rest of their catalogue covers everything from stalkers with a primate fixation, to shopaholics, alcoholics, suicide, window washers, manslaughter, high school geekdom, pollution and insomnia. And oh, how I love them for it *hugs BNL*
*friends you, on discovery of a fellow ex-Qld filmo* solidarity! Oooh, and icon love.

Date: 2006-03-06 01:56 pm (UTC)Nikka Costa's Happy In The Morning (http://www.sendspace.com/file/3xxefg) is fun, though I'm not sure if the lyrics "You take all my naughty thoughts and they get put to use instead" are entirely appropriate for a wedding, but you never know ;)
The Waif's Love Serenade (http://www.sendspace.com/file/of5030) is folksy but very sweet (lyrics "Another day comes, another day goes, but I'm still sittin' on top of the world, just thinking about you. I wouldn't say it if it wasn't true, but honey I'm in love with you...")
Royal Crown Revue are great if you're into swing, so here's Trapped in a Web of Love (http://www.sendspace.com/file/1kjkbm). (Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Atomic Fireballs and The Squirrel Nut Zippers are all along similar lines, though this seemed the most appropriate track from all of them.)
And for sheer glam, here's The Darkness' I Believe in a Thing Called Love (http://www.sendspace.com/file/m6qv44)

Date: 2006-03-06 01:58 pm (UTC)"Love will tear us apart" - Joy Division. I mean, it's romantic in that, 'I love you so much i want to die...' kind of way.
But in all honesty, "Moving on up" by Primal Scream. It's my party song.
"Sweet Harmony" by the Beloved (*very* dance-y). "Pure" by the Lightning Seeds.
Umm... perhaps you want something less than ten years old... "The Time is Now" by Moloko or "Forever More" by Moloko. *Anything* by Moloko.
"Enola Gay" by OMD... okay, so it's about a nuclear explosion - but man, can you *dance* to it.
I have some of these on mpeg but my upload speed is *really* slow. Changing my broadband plan tomorrow which should improve things somewhat.
Oh - and if you can get your hands on a copy of the Propellerheads remix of "Naked Eye" by Luscious Jackson you are one *lucky* son of a bitch. That piece is so goddamn funky it makes white boys dance.

Date: 2006-03-06 03:17 pm (UTC)Heh. 1) That totally gets you the emo kid icon; 2) I must admit that I actually considered this; and 3) Have you ever seen the movie Series 7? Specifically, the "Love Will Tear Us Apart" "music video" it has in it?
Let's not even touch the fact that I have a LWTUA t-shirt.
If you're able to upload any of them when your connection speeds up (*crosses fingers for you*) that'd be awesome. In the meantime, I'll keep my eyes open. Thanks!

Date: 2006-03-07 02:30 am (UTC)I *love* my Joy Division. Best band EVAR!! Okay, maybe along with Sonic Youth... and You Am I...
I>Have you ever seen the movie Series 7?
No - that was the reality game show movie, right?
The bandwidth won't increase until the weekend but i'll see if I can upload you Primal Scream and the Lightning Seeds in the meantime. I owe people music so I might put them in a post...

Date: 2006-03-06 04:18 pm (UTC)I'm about on a par with you, actually. Mam had worked her way through a bottle of wine by lunchtime yesterday, then passed out on the sofa in the living room. Dad didn't leave his room all day, and then barely spoke to me this morning. So. You know. Now I'm sitting in the library, listening to a shitload of Death Cab songs and alternately playing with Photoshop while I ignore my diss work, and staring out at the cricket pitch in an emo manner.
Which is almost pretentious enough of me to make me smile.

Date: 2006-03-06 04:33 pm (UTC)He appears to be shrieking something about how he's never going to let John use the "yes, of course, Rodney, I'm certain they're just" alien sex toys in bed, because look what they've done now! Cold and naked with moronic undergraduates looking at him, he seems to think, is not a good look.
I will not disabuse him of this notion and tell him that you were psychically involved.

Date: 2006-03-06 05:31 pm (UTC)Maybe I should try napping again, because the ideas presented in this comment would give me nice dreams. Hmm...
(no subject)
Date: 2006-03-06 06:40 pm (UTC)Napping in general is good, I think. I am going to go home, have some soup, tape the Oscars and then have a lie down somewhere and read. (So far, btw, I am quite liking Lymond)
More dreams of Rodney naked, whether on the TCD campus or not, are always a good thing. Certainly, that's what I was focusing on during class today. Well, that and
scribbling fic with young!Rodney-and-Frasertaking notes, of course.Re: tomorrow, do you want to meet up around ten thirty or eleven or so? There can be shopping and lunch before we go let you indulge yourself with the Jon Stewart watching?
(no subject)
Date: 2006-03-06 07:03 pm (UTC)Big yay! for liking Lymond. There is much to like. Such as mumble mumble *stuffs sock in mouth* Anyway, yes, continue.
Even bigger yay! for fic scribbles! *sleepy squee*
Your plan for tomorrow sounds sensible. *nods* Can we make it eleven, because, you know, sleep wonk? Arts ramp, as per usual?
John should take naps all curled in on himself, and then Rodney should slip into bed behind him and wrap his arms around his chest, and slowly, as they slept, their bodies should elongate and relax, and John would breathe deeply, his head tucked loosely against Rodney's shoulder.
Yes.
