So a while back, I wrote and [livejournal.com profile] wychwood illustrated a story called Four Quarters, in which John, Rodney, Teyla, and Ford (and later, Ronon) are in a band called The Puddlejumpers.

Obviously, a band AU needs a music mix to go along with it.

But there are also many more stories to be told in this universe, so a simple mix grew instead into a companion story, with the songs woven into the narrative (or perhaps more accurately, the narrative woven around the songs). [livejournal.com profile] wychwood made beautiful liner notes and formatted the whole thing.

And here it is.

Title: The Best of The Puddlejumpers: Bootleg Edition
Words: [livejournal.com profile] trinityofone
Pictures: [livejournal.com profile] wychwood
Rating: R
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Category: AU
Summary: And I felt like a star/I felt the world could go far/If they listened to what I said.
A/N: Special thanks to [livejournal.com profile] newkidfan, who provided two of the songs and inspired the whole thing with her terrific [livejournal.com profile] artword.

The Best of The Puddlejumpers: Bootleg Edition

Please comment if you download. We'd love to hear your thoughts on any aspect of this project.

I should also note that this story is posted on my website. "You have a website?" one might reasonably enquire. Yes, I do—thanks to the wonderfully generous [livejournal.com profile] isiscolo, who donated the space, and the talented and patient [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve, who designed it. I, however, am both a procrastinator and a perfectionist, and I haven't yet publicized it because I haven't been able to get it fully updated (or write a non-lame introduction). But don't let that deter you: check it out here, compliment Isis and Siria on their kindness and hard work, and then bug me to get off my ass and finish it already.

And when you're done: rock out.

ETA: I just want to make clear that tons of people have made amazing art for various stories of mine, and I love it all. However, only a small portion of that art (like only a small portion of my stories) is up on the site right now. If something isn't there yet, it doesn't mean that I don't like it--quite the opposite! It just means that I haven't uploaded it yet. I'm sorry; I suck.

Awesome! I love the way you guys have played with the mix-media format! :downloads, rocks out:

I, uh, I actually have a really (really, really, really, really x pi) belated additional birthday present for you. It's from [livejournal.com profile] ciderpress and I and it's a design for you website. It's 90% done but my codemonkey urges were somewhat squashed after my final web design assignment and then my dissertation ate it. I shall get it done by the visit though. :nods:

Oh, wow, thank you! And thank you to [livejournal.com profile] ciderpress, too! *wants both it and [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve's, as am greedy*

Yes, when you are here, I'm totally going to lock you away in my room and we can make things look pretty (and maybe you can help me put up the things I haven't been able to put up yet? [/so v. v. lame])

*hugs you*

Downloading the zip. The story still makes me flail like a flaily thing.

And there's no need to thank me, really. It's so not any good, because we all know my design skills aren't the best.

I'm suddenly amused at the thought of the inclusion of the song "Wild Horses" by The Rolling Stones causing large portions of the populace to have to run away. *g*

And thank you again.

Wow, this is brilliant!!! I especially lov the liner notes! I'm going to have to downloada all the songs and listen to them while reading it again, but what an amazing project!

And congrats on the website. I was just looking through your fic again and while your LJ kept good track, this is much nicer :-) Nice and clear layout and easily navigatable. Very cool!

One question though. Would it be possible to not havethe font on your pages fixed? On my screen, many fonts are too small to read, so I often have to download the pages and strip the code to allow me to vary the font size. [at the moment only the titles seem to be variable font]

Reading this, and Four Quarters wow...the Jumpers are a wonderful unit. I love the way each member fits a particular space. All the characterization and description is wonderful. Especially the on-again-off-again is there anything really there?-blinke and you miss it maybe - only in the dark - relationship between Shep and Rodney - they play off each other and with each other like sharpm cold razor on bone, and yet there's more there. I hope you write a lot more in this universe.

Wow.

Just, wow.

I'm always amazed by how much you can pack into just a few sentences. This is fantastic.

(And that's without even listening to the music yet since I'm at work, although I know about half the songs already)

Also, I'm completely captivated by John Sheppard as almost but not at all Bono, it just really works.

'Four Quartets' isn't my favourite story of yours - I'm not sure why, just that I couldn't really believe in them as a band, and that I find the idea of Rodney giving up science for music (but not really for music, for John, and then not ever really being able to have John) so heartbreakingly sad and despair-inducing. I'm not sure if the story was meant to be a sad one, but that's the way it seemed to me. But I just wanted to say that I think this is a really, really interesting piece of work. I'm fascinated with the way fandom and fanfiction changes and grows, and this is the first 'multi-media' fanfic I've seen done in this way, fully integrated. It works, and it's brilliant. Also, 'I Know' is one of my favourite songs, and the idea of Rodney doing it alone, acoustic, made me cry.

Downloaded, and it's incredible. The bits that are echoes of Atlantis- John's touch, the reaching hands that suck him dry- are so perfectly reinterpreted for this AU. The repeated wonderings about who's sleeping in which bed and the fans' squeeing over shirtless!Ronon make it feel even more like a real band.

And then the ones where the notes are wrong, or only half right, and the stories tell you what it's really about... beautiful. All of it, just beautiful.

This is just gorgeous. The writing, and the art, and the spaces between what the liner notes say and what the stories say are all amazing. Haven't even listened to it yet, and I'm already in love with it.

this mix is a lot of fun, the way more story is told via liner notes.

i have one complaint, though: that there does not actually exist a video of ronon hitchhiking shirtless is a DEEP INJUSTICE.

i mean, i suppose i could try to find some baywatch: hawaii, or something, but that's not really ronon.

.....ahem. anyway. the mix is lovely. ♥
