Apparently, I am allergic to Surf laundry detergent. I did my laundry at Siria's last weekend, borrowed her detergent, and now have a horrible, horrible rash. From the detergent, or so says the doctor.

*puts head in hands and cries*

I have so much work to do! I have to write two history papers because I can't take the scheduled history finals because they come after I leave Ireland. I have to prepare for my English final. I have to PACK and MOVE OUT and LEAVE THE COUNTRY and I have TWO WEEKS.

And now I itch so badly. My torso is in constant flaming pain, and since I'm apparently being poisoned by my own clothes, I have to go rewash everything. I can't concentrate, I can't even get through my friends list, I want to curl up into a little ball only that hurts, sitting hurts, standing hurts, lying down hurts. I want to die.

Also, Siria's computer is broken and I'd really like a refund on the whole week, please.

This is just to let you know that I may not be around much. Or I may be around a lot, bitching. Also, you should all write me porn.

*whimper*

Oh, honey. I can honestly say that I know exactly how you feel. I cannot use anything but non-bio detergent for sensitive skin, or else I get disgustingly awful eczema that makes me itch until my skin bleeds. Aveeno makes some absolutely wonderful calming lotion, though, that will help a little. And there's this stuff here, E54 cream? It's ultra thick ointment stuff that is almost impossible to scratch through. Whenever my eczema comes back, as it does for reasons I will never understand, I use that. And if you can find an oatmeal bath or something, it's so good for detergent rashes it's not even funny. Until you get everything rewashed and the rash goes away, wear only cotton - jeans and long-sleeved 100% cotton t-shirts, basically. It shouldn't make a difference, but it always has for me, and the long sleeves will prevent you from scratching so much that you scar yourself.

Out of curiosity, what did the doctor prescribe you? I know what my dermatologist back home gives me, and I'm curious as to how they do things over here...

In any case, I'm sorry, honey, and I hope you feel better! I know how horrible it is, and nobody deserves to be poisoned by something that should be so normal.

The doctor has me on Clarityn. I also of my own initiative bought some calamine lotion. The E54 sounds like a good bet, though--I think I'll go buy some before I head over to the launderette. Thank you for the sympathy--the empathy. Life is so stupid sometimes.

Clarityn is what they gave me - but that just calms down your allergic reaction, and it doesn't really help soothe the rash (at least, not in my experience). Definitely get the E45, and when you take a shower, make the water as lukewarm as you can take it, and wash with scentless, dye-free body wash (E45 makes some, and Simple does really good stuff as well). You'll be back to normal in no time!

(Also, it's E45, not E54. I'm dyslexic when it comes to numbers, as I think I've mentioned before...)

Do you have something to put on it? I see someone recommended E45 - check you're not allergic to *that*, though! It has lanolin in. I remember my mother slathering it on my chapped knees, and then, um, enjoying the resulting itchy, rash-covered chapped knees.

Is water contraindicated? Because if it isn't going to make the problem worse, you might find a cold(ish) bath soothes the itching. Or even just a shower.

Good luck with the rest of the week, anyway. It will get better! I have spoken! Also, I have faith in your and [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve's collective awesomeness. Yes.

PS Feel free to ignore the email I sent you immediately before reading this. So not the right time *g*.

PPS I hate detergent allergies. Mine wasn't anywhere near this severe, which was good, but also meant that it took me several weeks scratching before I realised what was causing the problem...

I don't know where you're at, whether England or the US, but last summer I got bitten by what the doctors thought was a deer fly. My whole leg below the knee swelled to like three times its normal size and itched like crazy. The only thing that saved my sanity was benadryl anti-itch cream. You might try that. :)

Think happy porny non-itchy thoughts. Like Rodney blowing John in the back of a puddlejumper while they're stuck on some planet. And after John comes Rodney leans up and kisses him. And John kind of bites at Rodney's neck and runs his teeth over Rodney's stubble.

Oh, ick! You poor thing. That happened to me while I was in college--it was even during finals. Fortunately it was impossible to disbelieve me, because I was red all over and totally miserable. I think what really made me feel better (besides the fact that my parents re-laundered everything for me) was lots and lots of sleep. Oh, and pure aloe vera helps too but it's a bit sticky.

p.s. I find it very ironic that one of the detergents I'm allergic to (there are three, plus a dryer sheet) is Purex. Hee.

Yesterday I was driving and listening to the radio, and Bruce Springsteen's No Surrender (http://www.brucespringsteen.net/songs/NoSurrender.html) came on. While belting it out, I was thinking (as I so often do), "Could this be about Atlantis?" My brain couldn't really fit it into SGA canon, but then I saw -- The Puddlejumpers.

We busted out of class had to get away from those fools
We learned more from a three minute record than we ever learned in school
Tonight I hear the neighborhood drummer sound
I can feel my heart begin to pound
You say you're tired and you just want to close your eyes and follow your dreams down

-- and it's John, wearing a sleeveless black T, hair soaked with sweat, leaning into the mike and singing Rodney's words:

There's a war outside still raging
you say it ain't ours anymore to win
I want to sleep beneath peaceful skies in my lover's bed
with a wide open country in my eyes
and these romantic dreams in my head

And Teyla's drumwork is *fantastic*.

::big, BIG, allergy-free, itch-free hugs::

you've got lots of good advice on how to soothe the itches, so all i have left is to wish you well.

BTW, the reason many detergents provoke allergies is that many modern detergents contain enzymes which work superbly for getting rid of stains that can't be removed any other way. Unfortunately, some folks (you & me included, i guess) develop allergies to the enzymes. You can also develop allergies to the perfumes used in some detergents/fabric softeners.

Also, to make sure you aren't constantly re-provoking the rash and exposing yourself to fresh allergens, rewash all your clothes AND bedding in a detergent that says it's allergen-free (usually has no perfumes or enzymes or various sundry other additives), and then give each load another rinse with NO detergent whatsoever (and no fabric softener or other additives) to make sure every trace of the allergen is gone. (also, resign yourself to having stains you won't be able to get out of your clothes. the enzymes are used for a reason.)

Also, also, not all antihistamines are equal. Claritin does absolutely NOTHING for me, it might as well be a sugar pill (I get more fun from sugar pills). If the Claritin isn't helping, try a different antihistamine. I don't know what you can get OTC there, but I like Zyrtec and Chlortimetron. Allegra also works but makes me sleepy. Benadryl, the old standby, certainly works, but makes me very very sleepy. YMMV.

but please, if one doesn't work, keep trying a different one until you get some relief. You're making me itchy just thinkin' about it...
