First, thank you so so much to everyone who wished me congratulations or best wishes on my new job. The first day went pretty well, although I'm mostly too zonked to write about it in detail. Suffice to say, I could do well to open a running tally:

Trin's Exciting Career in Entertainment Journalism!

DAY ONE

+Articles written about actresses and their dogs: 1
+Articles researched about Lisa Edelstein's "secret" past as a Club Kid and James St. James gal pal: 1
+Number of incoming phone calls messily fumbled: 1
+Glamorous celebrity interviews conducted: 0

But now--on to the truly important question!

What should I name Rodney's horse?

I know, I know--me and horses tend to make for a worrisome fic combo, but I'm trying my best to finish my [livejournal.com profile] reel_sga fic, and as I'm adapting The Searchers, this issue cannot be avoided. So...any thoughts on the name of Rodney's equine? Or, for that matter, Cadman's?

*is serious, adult-type person*

Sorry... ears perked up at mention of James St. James...

*big oogly eyes*

Only one call fumbled... not a bad start!

Late congrats btw...

Troll St. Troll (yeah, now you've figured out where my name came from...)

I don't think anything will ever top Rainbowberry. It's just too good.

Of course, I say this as the person who wants to get a cat and name it Pavlov.

Yes, I finally did! (I'm slow--I'd thought it was Troll's Troll. I don't know what my brain was doing with the extra T. *pokes brain*)

So...do you know anything about Lisa Edelstein's secret past as Club Kid Lisa E.? *vbg*

Now I'm picturing Rainbowberry wandering into The Searchers.

John Wayne in my head: That'll be the day!

As for the second point, my first reaction was to say, "Pavlov the cat? That would be purr-fect!" So really, if anyone deserves to be shot, it's me.

Hee. THe extra T... oh man. Sorry... amused me.

Sorry no... I don't even know who Lisa Edelstein is... *googles it* Hmm... didn't help.

This is a serious story, dammit! In the scene I'm writing, Rodney's entire family is being massacred while he rides (too late, too late) to their rescue. He can't be like, "Hurry, Clover, hurry!" It's...

*collapses into pathetic, wheezing laughter*

Okay, it's funny. But only if, like me, you're a VERY BAD PERSON.

Why oh why did the name Stefan just pop up in my head? {The name has always sounded vaguely serious to me, although it's probably just the teensiest bit silly for a horse.}

*runs away*

But really, Rodney could make anything sound dire, so Clover wouldn't be that much of a stretch.

*guffaw*

Lisa Edelstein plays Cuddy on House--which, funnily enough, I mainlined in my weeks of unemployment, prior to getting this job. I likes it!

Here's a blurb (http://worldofwonder.net/archives/2006/Jun/22/party_girl_makes_good_she_was_lisa_e.wow) about her Sekrit Club Kid Past. I don't think it's much of a story, really. But maybe if I'm really sneaky, I'll be able to twist this into a way to interview Hugh Laurie? *licks lips*

Leibniz? Hooke? Isaac? I am tossing names from Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle at you - is this Rodney at all interested in science? Because early scientific explorers might work. Or you could just go with "Paint" or "Red" or something indicating this particular horses color.

Lisa Edelstein?! Eeeeeee!

(Um, House fan here. I luuuuurve her - she kicks ass on that show! And she looks fabulous doing it.)

As for horse names, I was going to suggest some variation of "Biscuit" before I read your explanation, so that's out. Sorry, I got nuthin'.

Stefan sounds like something Anne Rice would name a vampire. Maybe I could write another story, about vampire horses...? (Ow, brain, ow.)

Here are a few lines from the scene with the name Clover inserted.

Rodney's horse was named Clover.
Rodney took good care of Clover...
“Come on, Clover,” Rodney told her. “We’re almost there. Almost there!"

Um. Not quite the effect I was going for...

*cries with laughter*

This Rodney, poor boy, has had almost no exposure to science at all--certainly not Earth science. I may end up having to go with something generic and horse-y. It's just...I like names to mean something. Even horse names!

Hee. I don't remember much about a Lisa E when reding Disco Bloodbath... and I just BARELY remember the Club Kids gig on Geraldo...

Good luck with Hugh Laurie! *wa-hink*

No, I had the same reaction when I saw what my assignment was (although I had to squee quietly, inside my own head). I passed the period of my unemployment catching up on House, and it totally owns me now. (Well, okay. It occasionally rents me from SGA, but still.) And Cuddy's awesome.

Dude, who knew naming a horse was so damn tough? At the rate I'm going, Rodney's going to have been completely uncreative and named it "Horse."

Vampire horses, it must be done.

And now you've gone and made Clover stick in my head, so really there's nothing else for it. No matter what you end up naming her she'll always be Clover to me. I will not replace all the names in Word. I will not.

I think she had left the scene by the time most of the events of Disco Bloodbath happened; I did an Amazon.com search on the book, and her name didn't pop up. The best I could find was a 1986 article in The Chicago Tribune in which she and James St. James are indeed hanging out, and in which her "impressive figure" is noted. *g*

If I actually got to interview Hugh Laurie, I think I might injure myself. I mean...I would be a consummate professional. Right.

Your professionalism is an example to us all.

I am so screwed with my [livejournal.com profile] reel_sga fic. So screwed. And I can't work, because I find out my degree classification in, like, six and a half hours and I am so. Very. Screwed.

Argh. God. I'm a horrible person. Kill me.

Oh, thank you! That looks like it could be really helpful.

I have already written a talking horse fic, and thus am exempt from writing the story where Rodney has a talking horse named Joe. But somebody should do it!
