First, thank you so so much to everyone who wished me congratulations or best wishes on my new job. The first day went pretty well, although I'm mostly too zonked to write about it in detail. Suffice to say, I could do well to open a running tally:

Trin's Exciting Career in Entertainment Journalism!

DAY ONE

+Articles written about actresses and their dogs: 1
+Articles researched about Lisa Edelstein's "secret" past as a Club Kid and James St. James gal pal: 1
+Number of incoming phone calls messily fumbled: 1
+Glamorous celebrity interviews conducted: 0

But now--on to the truly important question!

What should I name Rodney's horse?

I know, I know--me and horses tend to make for a worrisome fic combo, but I'm trying my best to finish my [livejournal.com profile] reel_sga fic, and as I'm adapting The Searchers, this issue cannot be avoided. So...any thoughts on the name of Rodney's equine? Or, for that matter, Cadman's?

Sorry... ears perked up at mention of James St. James...

*big oogly eyes*

Only one call fumbled... not a bad start!

Late congrats btw...

Troll St. Troll (yeah, now you've figured out where my name came from...)

Yes, I finally did! (I'm slow--I'd thought it was Troll's Troll. I don't know what my brain was doing with the extra T. *pokes brain*)

So...do you know anything about Lisa Edelstein's secret past as Club Kid Lisa E.? *vbg*

I don't think anything will ever top Rainbowberry. It's just too good.

Of course, I say this as the person who wants to get a cat and name it Pavlov.

Now I'm picturing Rainbowberry wandering into The Searchers.

John Wayne in my head: That'll be the day!

As for the second point, my first reaction was to say, "Pavlov the cat? That would be purr-fect!" So really, if anyone deserves to be shot, it's me.

This is a serious story, dammit! In the scene I'm writing, Rodney's entire family is being massacred while he rides (too late, too late) to their rescue. He can't be like, "Hurry, Clover, hurry!" It's...

*collapses into pathetic, wheezing laughter*

Okay, it's funny. But only if, like me, you're a VERY BAD PERSON.

Leibniz? Hooke? Isaac? I am tossing names from Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle at you - is this Rodney at all interested in science? Because early scientific explorers might work. Or you could just go with "Paint" or "Red" or something indicating this particular horses color.

This Rodney, poor boy, has had almost no exposure to science at all--certainly not Earth science. I may end up having to go with something generic and horse-y. It's just...I like names to mean something. Even horse names!

Lisa Edelstein?! Eeeeeee!

(Um, House fan here. I luuuuurve her - she kicks ass on that show! And she looks fabulous doing it.)

As for horse names, I was going to suggest some variation of "Biscuit" before I read your explanation, so that's out. Sorry, I got nuthin'.

No, I had the same reaction when I saw what my assignment was (although I had to squee quietly, inside my own head). I passed the period of my unemployment catching up on House, and it totally owns me now. (Well, okay. It occasionally rents me from SGA, but still.) And Cuddy's awesome.

Dude, who knew naming a horse was so damn tough? At the rate I'm going, Rodney's going to have been completely uncreative and named it "Horse."

You know, I can see Rodney having no patience whatsoever with names, or not being able to make up his mind, and just calling his horse, 'Horse'. That or the lot number at the auction he bought it from (unless he reared it?), so it would be called 'Forty Four' or 'Six' or something. Or maybe a day of the week? 'Tuesday' is a good name for a horse.

Hmmm, horse names are hard. I could give you a big list of horses I've ridden in the past, maybe that will help you get a handle on the "typical" horse names.

(Though not the show names, show names are fucking scary. Show names are like "Armful of Tiger Lilies" or "Razzle-My-Tazzle" and I don't think that's the effect you want for your story ;)

There was Newcastle, who was Newie for short, Callie, Jersey (who was colored and shaped like a Jersey cow), Rudy (who had a mohawk and was quite the irritable pony), Pirate (who had one eye), Dozer, Derby, Frisco, Beau, Merrie, Trixie, Trudy and others I can't remember at the moment. I hope that helps.

(PS: I've friended you :D and congrats on the job!)

A horse I once knew in passing was called "Bonanza Extravaganza," and every time it entered the show ring the announcers would be like, "And now, such-and-such-a-rider on BONANZAAAAAAAAAAA EXTRAVAGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANZA!" They got such a kick out of it, I decided that was the best show name ever. :)

New Job: 1 YAYS.
Fumbling only ONE call: 2 YAYS.
Enjoying new job where you write about people and their dogs/people and their past club lives: Priceless.

Horse name: Brownie.
My first horse's name was Brownie. Everyone should have a horse named Brownie at some point in their childhood (or adulthood) even if that horse is not brown.
Just 'cause there's nothing funnier than riding up on a black and white horse and saying "whoah, Brownie".
'Course I also had a horse I called Alpo.

I think the horse's name would depend largely upon the universe you're talking about. Like, you said this Rodney's not so much a scientist? And maybe wouldn't be making certain references? I mean, is this an AU set in the old west or on another planet or...? 'Cause that would make big difference; a lot of names that people give horses are region- or nation-specific (like "Dakota" or "Indiana"), or they're Biblical or they're references to cultural things (like "Trigger" or "Comet" or other famous-type Hollywood horses).

But, if Rodney's more a utility guy -- if his horse is a working ranch horse, and not so much a pet -- he might not even refer to it by name. For instance, when talking to other horse people you might often say "my mare" instead of "Mrs. Snazzlepants" or whatever your horse's name is. In fact, when I'm writing cowboy types on horses I often end up referring to the horse mostly by color or by gender or both, like "the bay mare" or "his gelding" or whatever.

All of that said, I think Rodney should ride a gelding named Brisco. I totally wanna have a gelding named Brisco one day.
