Tim Gunn, how are you so awesome?

In other news, my internet keeps going out. How else am I supposed to read articles in which Tim Gunn is delightfully bitchy about Cindy McCain apply for jobs without the interwebs? Woe!

Time Warner sucks. Anybody in the L.A. area use something different/better? I've about had it.

Now I can't stop thinking about John on Tim Gunn's Guide to Style, or Tim criticizing Rodney's look for making him seem prickly and unapproachable . . . possibly I should just read Cate's PR story again. ;)

Jenns, do you think we should plead with Cate until she writes us a sequel wherein Ronon snogs Tim silly? :>

You know, I have a great love for Tim, and he's quite right about those two...

But... So much of the media coverage (and I'm not talking about Tim Gunn talking about what Tim Gunn talks about, because it's totally appropriate that he comment on the potential first ladies' outfits) of presidential elections and campaigns sounds like you're trying to elect a monarchy. And you know, royals are great, we voted to keep ours, but I'm really glad my monarchy has minimal real power (and never uses what it has). :/

Yay Tim! (keeping this positive)

What makes it sound like we're trying to elect a monarchy? *totally confused*

Sorry, being unclear.

I meant that a lot of the critiques and superficial commentary seems to be related to the candidates' appearance, character traits that aren't necessarily related to politics, what their families are like, how they present themselves (the whole stupid 'celebrity' thing)... things that seem more about being a figurehead than about governing a country.

And I do see the point that the president *is* a figurehead as well, and perhaps that's why I'm getting confused and/or frustrated by it.

Sometimes it feels as though the figurehead aspect overwhelms the actual governing ability aspect. (insert caveats, not a citizen, no longer in the country, blablahblah)

And I do accept (to some degree) the argument that a candidate's integrity in other aspects of his life may reflect on his trustworthiness as a head of state. it just seems to be a bit *too* much about the little things.

All political campaigns contain too much shallowness and not enough substance. Sad fact of life. I don't think this campaign has been worse than any other, though, really. And while I could discuss at length the myriad ways Barack Obama and John McCain differ on issues, decision making skills, ethics, morals, and smarts, I can't deny that I do also find it telling that John McCain cheated on and divorced his first wife after she was horribly injured to marry a scary Barbie doll lady, and Barack Obama is married to a brilliant, passionate, and yes—stylish and real—woman.

True. And I quite agree with you about the difference between the candidates. I think we probably agree on a lot of issues regarding these two candidates. And I'm also not saying that there is a huge difference between this campaign and any other US campaign I've seen. I do think that the other elections in other countries I've lived in, countries that had monarchies, were a little less appearance-related. Just a perspective. And I suspect that I sound as though I'm criticising your country or your system of government, which was not my intent.

My country deserves a lot of criticism and I wish every day that the electorate were better informed about the issues. I just found the comparison to the monarchy very weird. ;-)

Yeah, sorry. It wasn't meant to be a political comparison to a monarchy, rather a highly superficial comparison! I meant that these sorts of articles feel more like what I'm used to reading about the Windsors, not the Rudds, Howards, Hawkes or Blairs (to throw in a Briton you might have heard of :).

But Australians are not best known for their fashion. :D

I use DSLExtreme, and I like them. Although I've been with them for, um, a really really long time, and in that time they've grown and merged and stuff, so you might want to check broadbandreports before actually giving them money in exchange for access to the tubes.
