Uh, there's no way in hell this is gonna be organized. I'll just go with my usual thing of liked/didn't:

YAY:

1. CAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSS. Omg. CAS YOU BADASS MOTHERFUCKER, I knew you had it in you. Shockingly, this is the scene I need to watch over and over IMMEDIATELY. (After I eat some pie.)

But: I am glad that he did actually die (it is a requirement for all regulars on the show; so welcome to the team, man!). I don't think death is the same for angels as it is for humans, and I really hope we get to hear a little more of what he experienced. And I like the possibility, which he used so well to scare Zachariah, that he was brought back by God. I bet you that's what Cas' mission is gonna be: to find the big guy.

2. YES PLEASE BRING ON THE FANGIRL ARMY. I've been saying since 4x18 that this is a resource the Winchesters should use; I was even going to write a fic about it. But you go ahead and do it, show, so I don't have to! I can use the time to write more non-incesty porn. BUT SERIOUSLY. An army of pissed-off fangirls would be fucking scary. Zachariah would piss himself and Lucifer might cry. He seems the sensitive type.

So, yeah: I betcha the Becky bits are gonna piss people off, but I thought they were pretty funny. FANGIRL ARMY FTW.

ETA1: I am disappointed that morethanbrothers.net is not a real website. Come on, guys: if SPN were HIMYM (uh...there's a thought. Brings new meaning to "wingman," doesn't it?), they would have totally whipped up a fake site for that.

3. Sam learned hex bags from Ruby. AWKWARD. I like how they played the loyalty but uneasiness between Sam and Dean; and Dean's speech at the end about it never being the same again...ouch. But totally in a good-hurt way. I'm glad it's not being glossed over, and I think that gives it lots of good space to move forward into.

4. Bobby! Despite my not understanding how he actually got possessed (isn't he the most well-warded man on the planet? Does he not have a tat like Sam and Dean's? He cannot be an easy dude to possess, darnit), I think they played that well: and welcome to the John Winchester Club of Fighting Possession, Bobby you badass. Also: totally called the incapacitating injury thing. (Uh...not that I did that anywhere publicly. But in my HEAD.) Dude! DEAN IS BATMAN AND BOBBY IS TOTALLY ORACLE. Trufax.

MEH:

trin (9:36:02 PM): DEAN IS A SWORD?
trin (9:36:08 PM): well, that IS what he calls his penis
aesc (9:36:13 PM): :-)

But seriously, beyond the MAJOR POINTS whoever it was that wrote that Dean-possessed-by-Michael fic gets, I was all "?" over that. Did they really bring him back from Hell for that? I don't get it. Being a vessel seems like so much more of a physical thing than something about one's soul. Until told otherwise, I think I will secretly pretend that Zachariah is a whackjob, that Dean DOES have a higher purpose that goes beyond Zachariah & Co.'s understanding. I think Cas still believes it so I will too. Zachariah's explanation seems way too "I Was Raised From Hell and All I Got Was This Lousy Job As a Vessel (and This T-Shirt)"

ETA3: I wrote a lot more about my problems with this twist (and some other stuff) here.

BLEH:

1. OVERSTUFFED EPISODE IS OVERSTUFFED. Wow, was there way, way too much stuff in there. You know what we could have lost right off? NICK'S BORING BACKSTORY. It is the same freakin' backstroy as like every comic book villain ever: oh, my wife and kid died, I BE EVOL NAO. But he's not even our villain! He's just some dude! Couldn't we have devoted that screentime to more of Sam and Dean's epic awkward—OR TO DEAN AND CAS?! (WHERE IS MY HUG, BITCHES?)

2. Also, the pacing was screwy. We definitely needed another scene between the plane and the car. I thought they'd been zapped again for a while. And then the pacing of the Sam&Dean in the motel/Becky/Bobby/research scenes were all weird too. Maybe this will work better on rewatch, but I missed the crisp, clean awesome of last season's premiere. That would admittedly be hard to top (BEST PREMIERE EVER), but still.

3. NOT ENOUGH CAS. Seriously.

Okay, I have been writing this post for too long and ignoring my friends and my pie. I will probably think of more later, but for now, know: despite my meh, I am still freakin' psyched for next week, and I need to rewatch Cas being a badass like a billion times now.

Or else watch this some more.

PIE NOW. (Do you see what I did there?)

ETA2: Am I the crankiest person ever? Jeeze, I must be. Meep.

Dude, I think you might get your wish. ;-)

I do hope the fangirls—who are now apparently for serious characters—get to be more than just kind of pathetic and feeling up Sam. We do have dimensions, you know! Some of us want to feel up Dean and/or Cas.

I suspect Cas would find the idea of a fangirl army completely reasonable. (And not just because Misha is... well, himself.) After all, prophets and heroes are supposed to have followers. Through the desert or on Twitter - times and circumstances may change, but the principle is pretty similar!

Btw, Becky was played by Emily Perkins of the cult Canadian horror Ginger Snaps (and sequels). She is AWESOME.

OMG BECKY IS TOTALLY AN APOSTLE. THE APOSTLE BECKY. I LOVE IT.

I want her to kick a little ass now. And to realize that as firm as Sam is, she should not sleep with him, as that is the seal of DEATH.

I KNEW THAT THEIR REUNION COULD NOT BEAT MINE - THERE WAS NO NUDITY OR HUGGING AT ALL! D: There better be some serious bondage bonding next week, show, FOR SERIOUS.

BUT OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD, CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS. BAMF. SUCH A HOTASS BAMF.

Forget sex, I just want conversations! They can talk about nothing, I don't care. TALK TO EACH OTHER.

And yes in my head there is naked hugging offscreen.

SERIOUSLY, they need to sit and talk and look longingly at each other since Dean will never be able to articulate how freaking TERRIFIED he was at the thought of Cas being gone forever, GAH.

Deleted scene on the DVD, yo.

I kinda love Lucifer, not the vessel but Lucifer while talking to him. I'm intrigued by the thought how everything could play out, everything could happen right now *G* I'm pretty sure that it will be epic!

I could not agree more with your bleh part. Those were the things that were bugging me too. Still I loved it with my fiery fangirl love. It couldn't possibly be anywhere near Lazarus Rising or In my time of Dying because Dean coming back from Hell just can't be topped. There was a lot of exposition and setting things into place, introducing the problems and quests of this season and I'm okay with that.

And I think they spent so much time on that Nick/Lucifer possessing dead wife scene to show Lucifer being all smooth and silky and persuading. It was creepy but still . . . . .less would have been nice.

I did love the fighting scene, the ending scene and just seeing everyone again.

I'm not happy that we didn't get a hug thought. :(

just seeing everyone again

Yes, on some level I cannot be sad, because I just missed everyone so much. *g*

S4's premiere would have been hard to top. That long opening with almost no dialogue? OMG, so brilliant. I would just have liked to have seen a little bit more of that EXTREME COMPETENCE here.

I get that they were trying to introduce Lucifer's character. I think this may perhaps be one of those times when being all superfen is a disadvantage, because I've read interviews and been to cons and heard Kripke and Co. talk about the sympathetic Lucifer/Paradise Lost angle for months, so it wasn't a surprise for me. I was like, "Yeah, God dumped you, yadda yadda yadda, more Cas plz?"

The fangirl annoyed me at first, but when you put in that perspective...I like the idea. A lot.

I think I will secretly pretend that Zachariah is a whackjob, that Dean DOES have a higher purpose that goes beyond Zachariah & Co.'s understanding.

I hope you are right--Dean being a vessel might be too literal an interpretation by Zachariah. Dean being Michael's sword has everything to do with Dean being Dean, rather than just a meatsuit.

I'm a little high on the fangirl army idea. The boys have always needed a better on-the-ground support structure—imagine them having allies in (almost) every town, hundreds of research assistants, and a bunch of women who believe in them and want to fight the good fight with them. And then when they win, you've got the next generation of hunters right there. By 2050, hunting's a female-dominated profession. IT'S AWESOME.

Dean being Michael's sword has everything to do with Dean being Dean, rather than just a meatsuit.

Yeah, exactly! It doesn't even make sense from Zachariah's perspective. If Dean's just meat, then what was the point of the last season for him? Why get him ready if he is essential irrelevant? I wrote more about this here (http://trinityofone.livejournal.com/182892.html); it's still bugging me.

Why get him ready if he is essential irrelevant?

That's a very good question. Maybe Zachariah was trying to get Dean's consent all along? And was really bad at it? Because he had to know all along that Dean was Michael's sword, since, if I remember correctly, planted the prophesy in Chuck's head.

Yeah. Zachariah, dude, your management skills SUCK. Why go through all the shenanigans in "It's a Terrible Life" when Dean, broken and hating himself at the end of "On the Head of a Pin," was in the PERFECT condition to consent? I DON'T GET IT.

ROFL seriously. I was really hoping they wouldn't go down that road.
