So in the end, Ireland won “her own private war”—neutrality at any cost.

That's the last sentence of the very last essay—the very last assignment—I'm going to write as a college student.

I am more terrified right now than I can possibly express. What Do You Do With a B.A. in English?

I think I'm gonna post some fic.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm not worried about you at all. You'll come home, you'll find something to do that you enjoy (or something you hate followed by something you like). It will all work out. Trust me. I'm always right.

You are clever, and I do trust you. I just worry that I will end up being like...you know, or stuck living with my parents for months and months and YEARS. Or working at Barnes and Noble again. *frets*

What do you do with a B.A. in English?

As someone with a B.A. in English/History, I can honestly say: not a fuck of a lot. But you can revel in the fact that you can make references that the engineers earning five times as much as you will never get. So, yay?

Um. *throws confetti*

My mom has a B.A. in English and French from Harvard. She keeps saying things like, "You know, honey, you can still go to law school!"

But my library will always be very impressive and scholarly. *nods*

Well, my friend with a BA in English works in publishing and gets free books... took her a while to find a job (not the easiest are to break in to) but it seems pretty good.

Your friend is awesome. Maybe I should look into that? If I can't be F. Scott Fitzgerald, I certainly wouldn't mind being Max Perkins.

And the awesomest thing? She gives me free books too, hoorah!

Seriously though, she's some kind of editor (don't ask me exact details) for HarperCollins and I know she does a lot of liaising with authors and printers and sorting out book designs and stuff - it sounds pretty interesting. I do know that it did take her a while to get a job in publishing, maybe a year of looking, and I think most of the houses are based in London if you're looking to stay here.

English language publishing is pretty much centered in London and NYC.

Here in NY, it's a very competitive field. In fact, it's so competitive that most of their entry level employees work there for...free. :gasp: :horror: It's obstensibly an "internship", but what it allows you to do is get your foot in the door and get the experience you'll need to move up into a paid position.

:: waves hand :: as a former English major, I can tell you, you can do a heck of a lot of things.

though i suspect you'll want a job with lots of writing. You'll be able to write a heck of a lot better than many folks out there.

in many cases, it's just having the college degree that counts, not necessarily what that degree is in. true. (unless you're going into some technical field, which you shouldn't have gone into without more preparation anyway. if so...there's always grad school!)

you'll find the job market difficult, but that's just the state of the current economy (no matter what the government & media tell you, it's not too hot right now). but you are very talented and incredibly focused when you want to be, so you will eventually end up with employment.

finding a job you *like* is more difficult, but doable, again, if you keep at it and keep looking until you find something. you may have to work some jobs that are less-than-thrilling in the meantime to make ends meet, but nothing keeps you from looking *while* you're employed (that's actually the best time to look. for some reason, employers usually hire folks who are already employed more readily than the unemployed. who knew?)

best of luck! keep us posted...

This is 100% true, and I know from which I speak - I used to be a recruiter for a corporation, and I hired a LOT of entry-level people right out of university. In general, it doesn't really matter which liberal art you majored in - what matters is that you got that degree. It's the piece of paper (back by the education) that's your ticket to your first job. You can literally do most anything.

Think about what you might like to do, eventually.

Think about what work-related experience you already have.

These things will help you focus on where you should search - what types of jobs you should look for.

Keep in mind that your first job will probably not be ideal. In fact, if it's in a field that you really want and that's hot - say, publishing - your first job may very well...erm...kind of suck. But if you do well in it, you'll move up in short order.

Dude, I totally get you. I will be finished with my college education in five days. And I'm getting a BA in Art History. Which means I'm qualified to... give museum tours and expound on the developement of the human figure. blah blah blah. But, I decided to put off the "real world" for three more years because I'm going to law school! Why you ask? A. I love having money. and B. that's three more years that I don't have to get a real job! Great reasons, right?

I can top you. My BA was in...drumroll, please...studio art. Ceramic sculputure, to be exact. What can one do with THAT?

My first job was actually in human resources. I ended up in information technology. Now I work in marketing.

So you can do almost anything you want with almost any degree!

As everyone else's said, I had that moment myself with my BA in English with a Creative Writing concentration. :) Five years later, I'm ensconced in a tech writing job, which isn't all bad if you can grok the technobabble.

Good luck!

If you figure that one out, maybe I'll have some idea of what to do with a BA hons in history and a Masters in medieval history. Other than look back and recall the days with fondness. :P

Bah, I figure that it is all fun and I have majorly good skills in many areas that just need extra training to develop. Anyone want to argue with me on it? No? Good.

Hm...one of my friends just got his BA for English, I'll ask him what he's looking at job-wise. But I've heard that a lot of companies are looking for English majors now, since they're the only ones who still know how to write. So you ought to have good luck.

I have a B.A. in English, and it's been incredibly useful! I write copy for ads, I proofread and edit other people's writing, and I have verbal skills and a wide range of knowledge that's very helpful in business conversations. Networking is all about intelligent chit-chat, after all. You're better prepared for the world of work than you might think. Congratulations!

P.S. Besides, all we English majors keep the fanfic flowing, right?
