Ugh. I can already sense that today's going to be one of those days where I can't concentrate or be at all productive at work. But at least I finally finished my story for [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic's Superpower Challenge:

Title: X
Rating: PG
Characters: S1 team—Sheppard, McKay, Weir, Teyla, Ford, Beckett & Zelenka
Length: ~3700 words
Summary: Scenes from another evolution.
A/N: Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] wychwood, who always knows just what to tweak to make it better.

X

(I'm kind of like, "Dude! I wrote gen!" Except that, in my head, it's totally not.)

So...now I have nothing to do except try to write the "Also Showing" column and pretend that I'm actually funny. Sigh. Anybody have any cool blogs to recommend?

Well, you could write your Hewligan Fest story. *nags*

No, you're right—I should work more on that. I'm doing the one you oh-so-subtly hinted about. ;-)

I can't believe I made that typo. *cringes*

I blame the cat on my lap.

Well, don't squee too much yet; I haven't gotten very far. Something I would also like to blame on your cat. ;-)

I really liked this story - it had interesting implications for interaction between the characters and I think it has great potential to go further if you so choose.

A quick heads up though - fics submitted for a SGA flashfic challenge are not meant to be posted anywhere else except the community until the challenge is over. It's in the rules ;-)

It's a way of ensuring that the community members get first look at the fic. Once the challenge is over (this Wednesday, I believe, but there'll be an announcement), then you are free to post the fic anywhere you like.

Oh, don't worry: the above link just goes back to the [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic page. This is just a pimp which, unless they changed the rules recently, has always been okay!

Anyway, I'm glad you liked the story!

Okay, cool.

I see you're over your dilemma of plagiarism/acknowledgement! ;-)

Well, I always felt that this sort of fusion thing was okay; I'm clearly not trying to pass the X-Men off as mine. What I was more concerned about was the idea that quoting common lines like, "May the force be with you" or even "You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake," suddenly required full MLA citations or it was PLAGIARISM! There are still some other fuzzy areas, but I don't think this is one of them.

As long as you acknowledge everything, there really shouldn't be too high a degree of fuzzy. Intention counts for a lot, but of course, you don't always know the author's intention...

I have a fic that's a movie rewrite that I'm now hesitant to post because of all this plagiarism stuff going around. I don't feel I've plagiarised or anything, as I've fully acknowledged everything, but I'm more worried about the reception it will receive in the current climate.

Out of curiosity, why do you use the term 'fusion' rather than crossover?

I think your movie rewrite would probably be received fine, as long as it's clear that you did more than just find/replace names—which I'm sure it is! As for why I say fusion in this case instead of crossover: IMO, a fusion blends two universes, so that the SGA characters were always mutants, or they always had dæmons, or whatever. A crossover is more about the universes colliding, so like, if Rodney ran into Logan at a bar, that would be a SGA/X-Men crossover, whereas this story, where Rodney has Logan's powers and some of his backstory, is a fusion. Does that make sense?

Yes, that makes sense. Wow, you've put a lot of thought into this. I don't write crossovers so much, so I've never really dwelt on it.

And yes, my fic does more than substitute names. ;-) Thanks for the advice, I'll take it onboard. I'm not quite finished yet, so I'll see how I go...

It was inspired by the Reel_SGA challenge, so it's that sort of format.

I was going thru my LJ memories and reread this fic. I wondered if you had written anything else in the 'verse and checking your journal, it looks like you didn't. And it looks like you've moved on to Supernatural fics now, so darn, no more for this, I guess.

It was a great fic. It's always fun to see authors mapping from one 'verse to another and your choices fit the character. Thanks for writing it.
