Further things that are making me ecstatically happy:

anna_luna made gorgeous art for The Sensual World, a.k.a., that totally weird bit of Aliens Made Them Get Married (and, Incidentally, Do It) fic I wrote day before yesterday. John in a veil, folks. I liked it in my head, but thanks to anna_luna's drawing, I LOVE it. I am strange.

Also, remixredux authors have been revealed! The amazing seperis was responsible for the remix of my story: Empty (Te Deum). *makes incoherent noises* It's so good. Go read!

Okay, so basically, this is all isiscolo's fault. I loved her Semper Fi so much, and it really made me see how cool Remix could be, the ways a story could be reinvented and retold and made new. And I wanted to play! But whoa, is it a lot harder than it looks.

auburnnothenna, who I was assigned to remix, has an amazing variety of incredible stories to choose from, but most of them intimidated me. I ended up choosing "You Must Remember This" first and foremost because I like it so much (mmm, amnesia + me = OTP), but also because it has a natural gap in the narrative, skipping from when John decides to see what kissing Rodney would be like until after he's discovered that the answer is "awesome, totally AWESOME." I thought, hey! I'll switch POVs and write the missing scene!

I was going to keep it in the tone of Auburn's story (I really was!) but I couldn't get anything along those lines off the ground. Then the line, There's a clock running down in his head popped into my head, and the obsession with numbers, and it just sort of exploded from there. Only with more angst.

I like the finished product okay. The repeated phrases--I'm a sucker for that, both as a writer and a reader; and I like the feeling of desperation, too, because desperation in fiction is kinda yummy. The thing I'm probably least satisfied with is that, unlike "Semper Fi," which compliments the story it was based on so perfectly, I think mine's still a bit too dependent on Auburn's--it works much, much better if you've read hers, and doesn't quite stand on its own. But then, you should all read Auburn's story anyway, because it's charming and warm, and much more the type of story I like to read, if not the kind I seem to write.

Yay! Jenn's story and yours were the only ones I was pretty sure about.

Yours because of the written-out-in-words numbers and hours/minutes/seconds variation, which is kinda strange, but it really accentuated the urgent and fragmentary feel throughout the story.

John tastes familiar—reassuring until Rodney realizes that what he's tasting is his own brand of toothpaste. I love this line.

Ooh, I like what you've done to your remix story (and aw, thanks so much for the nod). It feels so urgent, you're right - that desperation is underlined by the countdown, and it's lovely. I can't really speak to it standing on its own because I'd read Auburn's story before, but basically, I'm happy to be blamed :-)
